Title: Every Which Way (Sloan Brothers Book #1)
Author: Calia Read
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance
Severine Blake has seen far too many friends taken down in the crossfires of dating. She devises a precise course of action to protect her heart. The plan is working very well…until she meets Thayer and Macsen.
When the Sloan brothers come into her life, nothing is the same.
Thayer is self-possessed, arrogant and used to getting what he wants. Being near him leaves Severine unsteady and shaken. He makes her question everything.
Macsen contradicts his brother in every way. His calm personality captivates her. Severine is drawn to him instantly.
But Severine quickly discovers that when you want something, that want can turn wicked. Giving in is not always easy, especially when your heart refuses to give up the fight.
What little illusion of love Severine has is soon destroyed. Every option is broken, and the protection she has built around her heart instantly crumbles.
There’s just no right way with the Sloan brothers.
And if you think the goodness stops at one Sloan brother…it doesn’t! 😉

Severine,
You have forty freckles across your cheeks and nose. I know. I‘ve counted them. When you’re burned from the sun the count goes up to forty-nine. You have a sarcastic response to everything. You back down to nothing. You challenge me in a way no else has or ever will.
I told you I saw you first. But did you know I loved you first? Even now, through everything we’re going through, I’d be willing to do it all again if I had to.

“Everything in life comes down to choices.”
Right there in seven words – the first seven words of Every Which Way, mind you – Ms. Calia Read sums up everything I think about this book.
Severine Blake (that’s Seh-vreen not Say-vuh-reen) is possibly one of the most complex and hard to understand heroines I have ever read and I say that with a smile on my face. I do not mean it to be taken in a bad way…not even close. She is different…she’s an exception…her childhood has shaped her to make the choices she does and they’re rational and logical, for her – so it works. But it has made her into a beautiful but cautious girl…she’s friendly, but guarded, especially when it comes to her heart.
That is…until the Sloan brothers come into her life.
Let me start with Thayer…”The God”…”The Legend”…oh and I couldn’t agree more. He’s 6’9” with a basketball scholarship….
You had me at 6’9” but add in muscles and grey eyes and all sorts of other swooniness and I was done. I never stood a chance against Thayer (he was always my favorite)…and luckily, neither did Severine.
“Truthfully, even if he were wearing a cut-off with creepy pictures of wolves on the front and a fanny pack wrapped around his waist, it wouldn’t matter. She’d still think he was drool worthy.”
Severine wants Thayer…bad – which she doesn’t like, or she doesn’t want to like. She needs control and if it’s the death of her, she’ll convince herself she needs that control more than she needs Thayer – yeah…good luck with that! They are so much alike – another thing that irks Severine – but I can’t lie, it’s fun to watch unfold.
“The ego on the two of you is enough to make the windows shatter. So you’re in Severine-land, and he’s chilling in all his hot dude glory. You are like two magnets repelling each other. The magnetic field is too much.”
Those words of wisdom come from Anne…I kinda loved Anne…she was full of awesomeness. Severine may not have her head straight when it comes to love, but she has the pick of the litter when it comes to friends…Anne, Lily, Tosha – she surrounds herself with good girls who tell it like it is but still protect and love their friend.
NOW…besides the already stated facts, why can’t Severine be all happy go lucky in Thayer land – besides the fact that that’s what I WANT and we all know these books read my mind and do the exact opposite of whatever I want…
well that’s because there’s not just one delicious Sloan man, there is two. Macsen….and it would be too much to make him ugly right? Nope…he’s no Thayer – in fact I mean that literally, they are almost polar opposites – but he more than makes up for it….especially with those eyes…
“Finally, she could see his eyes. Everyone in the world had something special about his or her eyes. Everyone. Macsen’s eyes were unrivaled.”
I liked Macsen…but I never thought he was a good fit for Severine. He was safe…he was what Severine could control…and choosing him meant blocking out any risk of getting hurt by Thayer. If she only knew how much her decision would come back to bite her in the ass.
“My heart was on your sleeve, waiting patiently. You shrugged it off. You didn’t care. You didn’t realize.”
It doesn’t help the fact that there is already tension between Thayer and Macsen, Severine only adds fuel to that fire. But honestly, I didn’t see Macsen’s betrayal coming – at all. I thought he was the good quite brother. He surprised me.
So finally, after what happens with Macsen, Severine and Thayer finally have their shot. And…it…was…worth…the…wait.
“You know, you’re like no other girl I’ve ever met. I love that you don’t put up with bullshit.” His eyes poured out all of his secrets. Her heart was ruined. Without trying, she was falling for him. “You’re rare, Severine. Just like your name. It’s impossible to forget you.”
“You want to control me? Then do it.” His words came out instantly. “No other girl can say that. Only you, Severine.”
They are as fantastic together as I knew they would be….but there is a problem…Severine’s history with Macsen. She’s reluctant to come out with their relationship. Of course it all comes to a head…secrets are revealed, questions get answered (finally!) and in the end, when it all comes down…*sigh* it’s not pretty…
“I’ve waited to long for you! I want a future with you more than the present. All my family fuck-ups will come back and repeat themselves. That’s why I’m doing this. That’s why I’m telling you this and giving you the chance to walk away!”……She opened her car door and turned back to him. “I love you,” Severine blurted out. “You’ve taunted me from day one. There has always been this warning above your head, that you’d be bad for me, that together we’d be too much….” He shook his head at her words. Severine continued, “We proved my subconscious right.”
Twisted my heart up until the very last page….but it gave me the HEA I needed. BUT she did throw a little kink in at the end….Emilia. Emilia is mentioned once, in passing after Severine and Macsen break up – I just had a feeling there was something about her – and I was right, because she is the main character in the next book, Breaking the Wrong.
I really enjoyed these characters…I’m not sure how many books are left in the series after Breaking the Wrong but I did feel a little jilted at the end of Every Which Way. I want more of Severine and Thayer’s story, I feel they have more to give – then again, I never willingly want to give up characters, so I’ll always edge on the side of “give me more!” And if you want a book that will torture you with always wanting and craving answers – look no further. I was just shy of pulling my hair out at points. I do love Calia’s writing, she’s got a very distinctive style that flowed nicely for me. Can’t wait to get more of the Sloan boys. 😉
