Dear Maggie,

By putting pen to paper, I’ve always been able to tell you what was in my heart. When I was young and out of control, writing my feelings was a hell of a lot easier than looking you in the eye and baring my soul.

Letters were the only way I could say I loved you during a time when I was convinced that I didn’t deserve you.

Today, I’m writing this letter, not to push you away. Not to urge you to live your life without me. Not to try to explain the numerous ways I have ruined both of us.

Today I’m writing to say, thank you.

Thank you for never giving up on me, especially when I had given up on myself.

Thank you for always finding the good in me when it seemed buried under so much darkness.

Thank you for joining your life with mine, and holding onto it with everything you have.

Thank you for saying ‘I do’ on that spring day years ago when I knew, without a doubt, that I was the luckiest man in the world.

And thank you for our beautiful daughter who has shown me that I have something to offer. Something good. Something strong. That I am so much more than a troubled man with a troubled past.

I am a husband.

I am a father.

I am whole.

Because an amazing, beautiful girl took a chance on a boy scared to love.

I am happy.

I am healthy.

I have a life that I can be proud of.

Because of you.

You will always be my butterfly. And I am finally free.
