As you sit reading this note in the branches of our childhood tree, I get to watch the way your legs dangle towards the ground and the spots of light that filter through the leaves dance on your face. This is a special day. Valentine’s Day is said to have begun as a tribute to Saint Valentine, who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. According to legend, he healed the daughter of his jailer and before his execution, wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine.”

After losing you and finding you, I feel like I have been imprisoned in the best way possible. In our shared past and our unknown future, you hold my heart. You own my body and soul. You are the better piece of me, turning my darkness into light. We have survived so much and answered so many questions, but I have one more for you.

Josie Banks, will you marry me? Will you make me the happiest man in New Orleans? Will you give me a family and quiet my mother’s requests for grand babies? Will you promise me your future in a ceremony beneath the shade of this very tree, surrounded by blooming magnolias and everyone we hold dear? Say yes and I will give you sempiternity.
