Saturday, 0400 Hours
Sparks—
Had to run to Fire Station One. Don’t worry—you’re not missing an ice rescue call. Wilt got the dive van stuck in a snowbank. Yes…again. On my way to the station, I’ll think of appropriate punishments for him. Not sure if there’s anything severe enough to make up for having to leave our bed this morning, though. It was almost impossible to walk out of our room without kissing you awake and then… I need to stop there. Otherwise, I’ll head back upstairs, and Wilt can dig out the van by himself.
You’re so beautiful when you sleep. You’re beautiful all the time, but the silence makes it easier to see. That wasn’t a crack at your talkativeness. It’s just that, when you’re awake, you distract me from how you look—you’re so smart and funny and brave and strong, and that’s all I can see.
Enough of that, or I really will leave Wilt alone in the ditch. I’ll be back ASAP. If you get any leads on the HDG case, wait for me before you do any investigating. You seem to have a knack for finding trouble, and I want to be there to have your back if something goes wrong. Also, DO NOT take advantage of my absence to buy that truck. That discussion is not over. You have not convinced me that a lack of seatbelts, airbags and other modern safety features is acceptable, due to the vehicle’s “cuteness factor.” You are precious to me. I need you to be safe.

When she’s not writing, Katie Ruggle rides horses, shoots guns, and travels to warm places where she can SCUBA dive. Graduating from the Police Academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold.
