Leah,
Remember when we took that much needed vacation to Ireland a few years back. It took a bit of effort, finding babysitters for the kids and carving out enough time in my production schedule, but finally, we made it happen.
Two weeks in Ireland. Alone.
I personally never wanted to leave the hotel room. But, you had other ideas, and I found myself being dragged from one historic place to another while I secretly devised ways to get you naked and back in bed. About a week into our trip, we ended up at this little bed and breakfast. Do you remember? The old lady who owned it baked the best scones I’ve ever tasted and the bed squeaked like a banshee.
But the most memorable thing about that bed and breakfast was the church ruins across the street. I still remember the way your breath literally froze the moment you saw them.
We walked out that first night, before the sunset, ready to explore. Tiny flowers and vines had taken over the walls, growing in between the heavy stones. I remember you taking my hand and sighing softly as the sun set behind the trees. I should have said something in that moment. Something romantic—something worth the weight of what was surrounding us.
But I didn’t. I chose to let those precious seconds slip by me. I guess I just naturally assume after all this time you know how much I love you. Even when I don’t say it, I try and show it in everything I do. From the simple things like taking out the trash because I know you hate it, to the way my fingers skim over your bare skin when we make love.
But as I sit here and write this simple Valentine’s Day letter to the love of my life, I realize that sometimes showing someone how much you love them isn’t enough. Sometimes you need to remind them. Over and over again.
So in this moment, frozen in time, on this special day when we recognize the ones we love, I want you to know that I will love and cherish you for the rest of my days. You are, and will forever be the one I choose as my constant partner, lover and best friend. Thank you for taking a chance on a guy like me. I’ll never make you regret the life we’ve made together.
With all the love of a lifetime,
Declan
