Dear Andrea,
I know you are rather…angry with me over what you perceived as a, what did you yell at me? Oh yes. A “loveless suburban token of gratitude for wifery”. One of your finer turns of phrase, but of course I did hire you for your verbal insight.
What you fail to grasp, though, is why I bought you that chair. It wasn’t, as you accused me, because I wanted you to feel free to do more work off the clock. Nor because I value you more as a businesswoman than a cook—although I should be forgiven if that were the case. Andy, you know you are a terrible cook. Need I remind you of last week’s “pasta” dinner? I use quotations because we both know the charred ribbons of rubber you served had nothing to do with pasta.
I bought you that chair because I was feeling nostalgic. Once upon a time, we met in an office. And we fell in love before we even knew it. And we literally shattered my favorite wingback with the force of it. So when I bought you the overstuffed armchair, I was hardly thanking you for your wifery. I was anticipating more earth-shattering love—this time on a chair that will withstand it.
Happy Valentine’s Day,
Blake
P.S. We don’t live in the suburbs. It’s a planned community. There’s a difference.
