Dear River,
I’ll probably never send you this letter, but I had to write it. I’ve been struggling with what happened between us for a long time.
I wish you knew that I never meant to hurt you. During those precious days in college when we dated, I told you that you were special, and I meant it. In fact, the more I got to know you, the more I realized just how special. Your strength and courage blew me away.
And despite what you think, my feelings for you were real. When you stayed with me that first night, and gave me your innocence… I don’t know what to say. I have no words to express what that meant to me. I couldn’t believe that with all you’d been through in the past, you trusted me that much.
I had hoped that we’d have time to get to know each other better. To build a relationship. Maybe even have a future together. Then that unfortunate incident happened…
I can’t really blame you for thinking I was in on it. Every shred of evidence pointed to that conclusion. But it hurt that you thought I was capable of being that cruel.
But as I said, I don’t blame you. With what you’d had to contend with in your life, why should you trust me? You’ve never been able to depend on anyone before. Except to hurt you.
When you fled, leaving college without a trace, I told myself there was nothing I could do. I didn’t know where you were or how to get in touch with you.
But I should have tried harder. I should have tracked you down and made you understand how much I cared for you.
I was an idiot.
Now that I’ve found you again, I plan to make amends. I know you’ll turn down any help from me, even to make your dream come true, but I’ve learned how to get what I want.
And I want you.
I know you hate me right now, but I’ll find a way to change that. I will invest in your new business venture—building the company you’ve always dreamed of starting—and ensure it’s a success. I will overcome your resistance and convince you that we should be together.
And I will spend the rest of my life proving to you just how much I love you.
Kane
