Subject: Valentine’s Day To-Do List

So, last year didn’t go so bad, did it, käresta? Considering how much you hate Valentine’s Day, and how you’d forbidden me to buy you presents, or take you to dinner, or even mention the V word. I seem to recall the day ending very well, with you right where I wanted you and me…mmm…yes…
I think, Miss Gregory, that you secretly enjoy it when I don’t follow instructions. I, on the other hand, like it when you do. So, without further ado, here is your to-do list for this evening:

Finish your meeting. Don’t think you can cheat on this, flicka. I am watching you from my office window, standing in the freezing cold gardens with the groundskeeper, listening to him wax lyrical about mulch and spring planting. So prim and proper you look, in your long wool coat and black heels, with your hair in its usual French twist and your mouth pursed in concentration. I can think of much better uses for that luscious mouth of yours…

Walk directly upstairs to our bedroom. Resist the temptation I know you will be feeling to linger in the front hall, inspecting restoration work on the hall’s trompe l’œil ceiling or chatting with tourists, staff, or any of the countless other people begging for your time. Arborage House has been standing for over five hundred years and it won’t crumble to the ground while you are otherwise occupied with your Lord and Master.*

Get into the bath I’ve run for you. Do NOT take down your hair—that is for me, later—but do take your time in the bath, my selkie. When you’re finished, your red velvet dressing gown is hanging on the door.

Go to the window seat. I’ve left three things for you there: my white silk scarf, a single, perfect Arborage rose, and a coil of silk cord. Ah, I can see you smiling, min älskling, thinking that you are familiar with these items, and know how I will use them, how they will make you feel. You keep thinking that, Luna. Keep thinking that you know what’s coming to you.

And last thing… Walk down the hallway to the very end of the private wing, to the damask curtain concealing a door, and beyond that a small room furnished with a wrought iron bed. Our room. Our bed.
I’ve lit the candles, my love. All that’s left is to close your eyes. Close your eyes and knock.
* Yes, your Lord and Master. Who is also your servant, your willing slave, the man whose heart you rule and body you own…your Valentine.
