Dear Kate,
It’s a few days before Valentine’s Day, but I need to get these thoughts out right now, and I don’t think I’ll be able to wait until Valentine’s Day to share them with you.
I’m in the waiting room at the hospital right now. It’s late, around 1 am. While I sit out here watching Sportscenter, you’re in a delivery room with our Mel. I can’t find the words to tell you how excited I am to become a grandfather. I’m also not sure how to tell you how proud I am that you’re mine. It’s my job to try, though, right?
Some guys I played hockey with never settled down with just one woman. They thought variety was a luxury us poor married guys were deprived of. They were wrong. Because of you, hockey didn’t come first for me – family did. Nothing has ever meant more to me than our family.
When we met, you were a beautiful, brave young 22-year-old with the whole world in front of her. How lucky am I that of all the men you could have chosen to spend your life with, you chose me? I got to hold you and cry with you when our hearts were broken. We’ve both had losses in our lives, and we understand that the pain never fully goes away, but it fades when you find new joy. I found more joy than I ever dreamed I could with you. I got to be a father to our children, and watch you nurse them, hug them, cook for them, teach them and be their biggest cheerleader.
You’re the best mother I’ve ever known. You’ll also be an amazing grandmother. We both have lines around our eyes now, and I’m getting more salt than pepper in my hair by the day. But you’ve never been more beautiful, Kate. I’ve never loved you more.
Mel will be a great mom because of the example you were to her. And when I see you holding our first grandbaby in your arms, I already know how emotional it will be. It’ll remind me of seeing you hold our kids for the first time, your face filled with love, joy and pride.
Life just keeps getting better with you. I’m wiser and mellower because of you. And with everything in me, I promise to love you until I draw my least breath.
Yours,
Ryke
