love note

My dearest Fruitloop,

It’s Valentine’s Day, the first one without you.
It hurts. It tortures. It’s so damn hard.
I miss you.

I think of you every second of every day, Short Stack. I miss you so much I ache, but then I catch you reflected in Zara, and I smile. I feel your soothing touch telling me it’s okay, that we’ll be all right, and that thought helps to lessen that pain, that hole.

I hear you in Zar when she giggles or tries to talk, and, most of all, when she gets all frustrated if she can’t quite do something yet.
She’s my heart’s reminder.
Our girl’s a fighter, baby, just like her mum. She’s beautiful, kind, and sweet. Just as feisty, too. And I know with determination like her mother’s, she’ll go places, and have the best guide while getting there. You, our angel.

This morning, over a breakfast of Froot Loops and apple slices, I told Zara another one of our stories, like I do every morning. Our girl will know her mother, of this I’m certain. Today’s was a special one, about the first time we met. And from her toothy grin and happy squeals, I could tell she loved it.

After breakfast, we took a trip to the store where we picked up the special chocolate bouquet I had ordered. One I place on your nightstand, like I’ve done with the others, ones I have to replace often because I’ve eaten the chocolates, trying to feel close to you.

As I remember that first time in the garage…

…and think back on our wedding day.

I’ll forever buy you chocolate tire irons.
Zar and I might miss you like crazy, but I do not regret a moment. Not a single one.

My only regret was that time wasn’t on my side. I needed more time. We needed more time, and Zara needed her own time with you, too.
You might not be here, but you are always here.

We love you, Fruitloop.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

All my love,

Hendrix
