love note

Dear Stephanie,

I just wanted I apologise for the many doggie marathons we went to. You pretended to enjoy yourself when we all know that you didn’t pretend at all. Blondie, you loved the hot dogs out of those doggie marathons. Had we not gone to those marathons we would have never found our son. Well, not our son, but our son’s breed. Do you remember when we went to the pound and I yelled out, “I’m here for the sausage!” when we were adopting our dachshund? To reference your favourite movie, Girls’ Trip, we became sausage connoisseurs the day we adopted Monsieur Saucisse Appleton Moors. I can already tell you’re rolling your eyes at me. Fine, Sage the sausage dog because you thought his full name was a mouthful. But guess what, I call him ‘Monsieur Saucisse’ all the time!

Coming home to you and Sage every night is my favourite part of my day. Seeing his short black and brown legs run down the hall to me makes me smile ridiculously. But when I see you walking right behind him, God, Blondie, my heart feels so damn full.

You make it feel like that every single day of my life.

But I’m not here to tell you what you already know. I’ve written you this letter because it’s Valentine’s Day. And Valentine’s Day is a special day for us. It was the day I wrote you your first Valentine and I made your life. It still blows my mind that no boy ever wanted you as their Valentine. They were such idiots because I think you’re the best goddamn Valentine around. So I’m happy that another year has passed where I can write you a letter.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Blondie.

Our very first Valentine’s Day, I asked you to someday marry me.

Well, Blondie, it’s been years since that first note.

And well, someday has reached us.

I think we finally have it right.

We’re happy.

Hell, my brother is happy and we have to surpass him.

Robert Moors is not allowed to be happier than us, Blondie.

It’s in the rule book.

But I also know that being legally married scares you because your parents got divorced. But you can’t be bitter about them being divorced because you got your brother, Jarred, out of your father remarrying. And well, we’re never going to get divorced. We’re not bad apples, Apple-ton! We’re gonna make it. I know it.

So I’m going to do you a favour.

I’m going to compromise.

How about we have a spiritual wedding?

We won’t make it legal.

We’ll do all the wedding stuff our way.

Sage can be our ring boy.

And plus, Ally will be your sister-in-law.

So you’re winning by being spiritually married to me.

I mean, you moan “Oh, God,” when we make love, so you’re pretty spiritual, Blondie.

I bet you’re groaning and saying I’m an idiot right now.

Just wanted to make my argument valid.

Stephanie, someday is here.

Give this hopeful man a shot at calling you his wife.

That way we never have to use the ‘D’ word.

But I know, from the bottom of my heart, that we never will.

I love you, Stephanie Élise Appleton.

I want nothing more than to be your husband.

I want someday right now.

I want you as my wife.

But I’ll wait.

Wait until the very day you’re ready.

I’ve loved every minute and every day of my life with you and Sage, and I don’t ever want to be without you both.

So when you’ve reached someday, let me know.

When you want awesome children and other lame stuff because you’re my all-in, let me know.

You are and always will be my all-in.

Oh, and if you didn’t get what I’m saying, I’m no longer not-proposing anymore.

I’m spiritually proposing.

Stephanie Élise Appleton, will you someday spiritually marry me?

When you’re ready, just say:

Oui.

I love you endlessly.

Your man of spirituality,

Julian.
