Maybe that old song got it right.
Maybe love can be better the second time around.
When one of my wingmen needs help, I’ll do anything for him, including calling in a favor with the one person I swore I’d never speak to again.
Not after I walked away from that life five years ago and ditched the trappings of my success. The keyword being trap.
I left it all behind.
Including her.
Now the ambitious, brilliant, talented, and undeniably beautiful Roslyn Porter is back in my life. I’m not the same person she knew. I’m trying to be a better man.

Roslyn, my love,
It’s sometime between midnight and dawn. Ione and I are awake, sitting in my favorite chair, staring out the living room window at the moonlight sparkling on the bay. The house is quiet and this is what true peace feels like. Sleepy, happy peace. Ione grips my finger as I write this note to you, her tiny, strong, perfect fingers.
Our daughter.
Even with her nestled in my arms, she doesn’t seem real. She’s ours. Still blows my mind we created her, although you did most of the work. Gotta give credit where it’s due.
When she scrunches up her face, it’s a mini version of you. Have you noticed that? The way her nose crinkles? All you. Her determination comes from us both. If she’s stubborn, you can blame me. And I swear her double ankle rolls are the twins to my grandmother’s. She’s us and so much more.
I wouldn’t trade this moment and this life for anything.
From down the hall, the soft sound of your snores break the silence. I’m tempted to bring Ione back into bed with me so I can watch you both sleep. But you need your rest.
You don’t believe me when I tell you how beautiful you are in this moment. Yes, even with the dirty hair and milk stains on your favorite sweater. You navigate this new role with the grace and determination you approach all things in life. I’m in awe of you, my love.
How did I get so lucky? To be loved by you. To have a beautiful daughter with you. To be able to wake up every day and love you. I promise to show you every day how much I love you, knowing it will never be adequate to express what’s in my soul.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Roslyn.
You are my true love, my heart.
~Dan
