Dearest Julianne,

Happy Valentine’s Day.

I contemplated what to give you – jewelry, shoes, an extravagant evening out in New York or Los Angeles – but this year the first gift I’m giving you is rest.

You were up most of the night with Clare. She was fussy and wouldn’t settle, so you walked the floor with her.

And, bastard that I am, I slept through it. I’m sorry.

After you came to bed early this morning, I turned off your alarm. And when Clare woke up a short time later, I walked the floor with her. I’m wondering if she has an ear infection.  

I’ve changed her, dressed her, and fed her, and now we are getting ready to drive over to the pediatrician’s office. I’ll see you when we get back.

So rest well, sweet Julianne. We’ll open the rest of your gifts and discuss celebratory activities later.

I may need a nap first.
