            Instead, I played the game. I kept my cool. I protected my pride and my heart because I thought telling you would hurt them both. It hurt more not to. It hurts now. 

            And when you insisted that our friendship needed protecting too, I didn’t see how scared you were. I didn’t do enough to assure you, every minute of every day, that I’d never hurt you. That I’d love you with all I had to give and more. I didn’t promise you it could be something better than we ever imagined. 

            I’m promising now. 

            You’re probably reading what they write about me in the magazines and online and feel that the distance between us is stretched to breaking with other women. With fame and money. Or the drugs and booze they think I’m drowning in. I’m not. None of it. What drowns me is not being with you. Every second we’re apart is another drop in an ocean of regret, because the only thing that’s ever been real for me is how I feel when we’re together. More real than even my music, because every note I’ve ever sung, every word I’ve ever written has been inspired by you. Infused with you.  

            God, Vi, I never said it. I’m saying it now. It’s you. You’re the girl in every love song, and you always will be. Now and forever.
