Dearest Violet

I’ve just come home from dropping you at Heathrow and already I’m all at sea. The house is empty without your smile, your laugh and your constant affection (which I’m sure I do not deserve). I hate you being gone. I know you’ll be back in just a few days but each of those twenty-four hours without you will feel like a month.

It’s simple—I’m not meant to function without you.

I only work when you’re with me.

I know you think I’m terribly old-fashioned writing to you whenever we’re apart but somehow, I can’t not. It’s true that I’ll speak to you as soon as you land and then near constantly until I see you again but somehow, it’s not enough. Writing to you soothes me, it allows me to think about you while I write and then I get to imagine you reading this. And of course, you can re-read my letters whenever you feel alone, or you need to know I’m here for you because know that I’m your constant in an ever-changing world.

I’ll always be here, waiting for you.

You came along and blew away the dusty old cobwebs that chained me down but as soon as you leave, they crawl back over me and leave me crooked with loneliness. Crotchety with need for you. You’re my sunshine, my sunrise, my sweet, sweet flower—my wonderful Violet.

Know that whenever you think of me, I’m thinking of you, no matter where I am or what I’m doing.
