I can see your eyelashes fluttering from under the door. 

I asked you to stay in the living room and watch your sea otter show while I did two things: wrap your gift and make a couple of work calls. 

I asked you for half an hour. 

We shook on it. 

You smiled and kissed me on the cheek. 

That was ten minutes ago. 

Ten minutes of you interrupting with random questions: Do I need something to eat? Am I stressed? Why is my heart rate higher than it was two minutes ago? Does my watch need charging? Do you need to order me more playing cards? Where’s Lawrence? Are we having mac & cheese for dinner? Will I cook since the apartment still smells smoky from last night?

I could go on and on.

But since you’re already peering through the crack, I’m writing you this letter and sliding it under the door with another IOU to go along with it. 

The truth is, I didn’t need to make a work call or wrap your gift. You should know I’m far too calculated to wait until the last minute. 

What I really wanted was to draw out your torture—to witness the sheer exuberance of your personality when you’re excited about something. 

Valentine’s Day is supposed to be the day we show our significant other how much they mean to us. 

Except, I didn’t buy you any chocolates or flowers to show you how much I love you. Instead, I wrapped an empty mac and cheese box and dropped an IOU into it every single day of the year. 

My reasoning for those IOUs were absolutely insane. 

You made me laugh. 

You used all the hot water. 

You snored. 

You used my toothbrush. 

You kissed me when you thought I was asleep. 

I made up every excuse in the world to give you an IOU, Ainsley. Because the truth is, every day with you is a lover’s holiday. 

So please, get up off the floor and wait for me in the kitchen. I’m starved and it’s not for mac & cheese. 

Happy Valentine’s Day, my crazy girl. 

I love you more than you love Lawrence.
