War changes everything.
It shatters dreams and unravels families. It extinguishes—not just life, but love and hope and stability.
For Annalise Dubois, during the outbreak of World War II, life as she knows it ceases to exist.
Bitter and unwilling to watch as her best friend and the love of her life start a family, Ana must make a choice: misery or change.
After joining the war effort, being recruited by the SOE and training as a Secret Agent was not something she ever would have envisioned, but sitting back wallowing in her own grief was something she refused to return to.

Reuben is such a charmer…

Ana,
When you fell from the sky, in the plume that was a white satin parachute, I knew at that moment my life was about to change irrevocably.
I called out the code word to alert you of my presence, you replied, and it was like a soothing balm to my very soul.
Then you stumbled, and I gripped your elbow to stop you from falling, but I wasn’t prepared for the physical reaction my body would have from such an innocent touch.
Though you were with the others in the back of the truck, your very presence invaded all of my senses. And then when we arrived at the farm and you were all led down to the basement, and I finally saw you in the light, I was caught in a snare, captivated instantly.
I didn’t want to look away, and then when you introduced yourself, I could only nod in response. Knowing I probably came across as ornery. I was struggling to process what this meant. But I did know I didn’t want you to be here behind enemy lines. I wanted you safe.
Forgetting myself, I almost offered you my hand, but I couldn’t do it. I needed to compartmentalise why you were here. You were here for a cause, the greater good. You weren’t here for me, and you weren’t mine, but I knew immediately I wanted you to be.
Instead, I tried to take care of you in the only way I could in that small insignificant moment in time. I pointed over to where there was fresh bread, jam and milk. And then I turned and walked away.
When I closed my eyes that evening, you were all I could see, all I could think about, and since then, I’ve only ever seen you.
Yours Always,
Reuben
