“Daddy, I’m pregnant.”
The last three words Owen Kincaid ever wanted to hear from his teenage daughter. The firefighter knows how hard it is to have a kid when you’re still a kid yourself. He did it, and now eighteen years later, history is repeating itself. To say he’s beating himself up is an understatement. The last thing he needs is to fall head-over-heels in lust with his daughter’s midwife.
Kerry Humphrey hates her new client’s father. She has no reason to hate him, except for the fact he’s tall and brooding and always there, hovering in the background of appointments. And the crackle of chemistry every time their eyes meet. She hates that, too.
Everything about their attraction is ill-fated. But it won’t go away. Maybe, for one night, they can be… Reckless at Heart.
Owen sure does love his wife…

My sweet wife, my gorgeous Kerry—
What did I do to deserve you? You’ve brought the brightest sunshine to my life and filled my home with laughter and love all over again. I don’t know if I tell you often enough how much I love being your partner, in life and in parenting, but especially on days like today, when we’re two ships passing in the night, and it doesn’t feel hard at all.
I miss you, of course. But it’s the sweet, good kind of missing you, more of a promise than a sadness.
I started writing this note one minute after midnight, just as Valentine’s Day started, so right about now, you’re probably fast asleep with Lila right next to you. God, the way you look with our daughter in your arms. You’re beautiful all the time, but when you’re all soft like that? I just want to wrap myself around you and never let go.
Tomorrow I’ll tuck this note into your lunch bag and you’ll head to the hospital to help bring a new baby into the world. And I’ll be so proud of you, my fearless, glorious wife. Before you leave, I’ll hold you close and kiss you until you’re breathless.
That’s a promise, too.
That I’ll be waiting when you get home. That I’ll want to hear all about it, every last detail of how you changed the world. That I’ll have dinner ready and our baby all tuckered out, ready for a cuddle with her mama and then an early bedtime.
Because it’s Valentine’s Day, and I have plans to show my wife in slow, intense detail just how much I love you. I’ll growl it against your skin, like I usually do, all rough and urgent. But you’ll have held this note all day, knowing that deep down, I bask in your sunshine. Utterly and completely in love with you, more each day than the one before. The growl is just my way of saying thank you for letting me be your Valentine.
Your adoring husband,
Owen

I felt the love Owen has for Kerry. It touches my heart he expresses so clearly his needs for her. Love all of your books and the little snippets you allow us later in to their lives.

As always, Zoe has a way of expressing the simple pleasure of love in a LTR that burns deep and slow but also has the occasional conflagration.
