My Dearest Julianne,

 

You’re very clever, my love, but I found where you keep your secrets.  Just after Christmas I went looking for something and found a box you’d labelled “Taxes.”  Surprised our tax returns were hidden in our closet rather than in the filing cabinet, I opened it.  There, neatly arranged and tied with red ribbons were stacks of letters.

 

Forgive me, but I looked at them. They were all penned by me and addressed to you.  The earliest was from many years ago, when you were my student in Toronto.

 

I was humbled.  You seemed to have kept everything – every note, card, and letter.  Just as I was placing them back in the box, I spied a photograph.  In it, you were standing on the beach in Belize, wearing a large, floppy hat and a small, purple bikini. You were laughing from behind your sunglasses and holding a mango.

 

I wondered why the photo was hidden until I read what I’d written on the back …

 

It’s time to return to Belize.

 

Aaron and Rachel will be arriving shortly to take care of Clare while you and I fly to Belize City. I’ve arranged for us to stay at the same resort in the same accommodation. Our private beach and a basket of mangos await.

 

Clothing will be optional.
