Ten years ago, my brother’s best friend broke my heart. Now he needs me to be his wife…
When I escaped my hometown of Maple Ridge, Oregon, I swore I’d never return. Not after my brother gave up his life due to PTSD. Not after his best friend and former Marine brother Lucas Carson shredded my heart.
Now, I’m back in town again, and Lucas needs my help.
He has gotten himself into trouble, and a wife will help smooth things over with the landowner of the property Lucas wants to buy. Lucas’s goal is to create an outdoor recreational program for wounded veterans, and this is the ideal place for it.
It’s a win-win for me and a way to honor my brother—as long as Lucas doesn’t discover the real reason I turned my back on the town all those years ago.
Lucas is so sweet…

Letter #86
Simone,
Thanks for the chocolate brownie cookies. They were great as always, and I had to fight off the guys once they found out you’d sent them.
And that includes your brother.
By the way, he wasn’t thrilled when he found out I got the cookies. I’m supposed to remind you that he’s your favorite brother. Yeah, I know he’s your only brother. But as your favorite brother, he strongly believes he should have first dibs on the cookies.
Anyway, dumbass brother aside, please keep sending them. They’re always a bright spot to my days here. Your letters are a bright spot to my days.
Not much for me to tell you about my time here in The Place That Shall Not Be Named. I miss playing hockey, and I miss hanging out at the lake with you and our friends.
And most of all, I miss you, Simone. I miss kissing you and being inside you. I guess I shouldn’t write that in case your brother rips this letter out of my hand so he can read it and give me a hard time. He won’t be too impressed if he finds out how we’ve been involved off and on for all these years. He knows more ways than I care to elaborate on for torturing people—starting with stealing your cookies.
Can’t wait to see you again on my next leave to the US.
Love,
Lucas
