Valentine’s Day… Kellus hadn’t celebrated the day in more years than he could remember. Surprisingly, Arik was making a production out of the almost holiday. Okay, that wasn’t all that much of a surprise. Arik seemed to want to celebrate all the special days in grand style, but the cupid had been extra loose with his arrows this past week. Arik had taken advantage of every opportunity to show his love, especially when it came to sexy time in the bedroom. Kellus had to admit, he’d loved every minute of their time together. His own plan to show his appreciation didn’t include a gift. Instead, he arranged to make Arik’s favorite meal then entice him with a decadent chocolate dessert. Yet now, he found himself still wanting to do a little something more just because it was Valentine’s Day.
Unsure what else to do, Kellus had gotten up early and sketched something quickly on a piece of copy paper. He’d only come up with this idea a few hours ago and hoped Arik might find the sincere sentiment in the offering. At least he hoped it wasn’t too childish. Nothing he could buy at a store would truly convey the depth of love he had for Arik. Quickly, he etched the outline of connecting hearts then did a fast sketch of both him and Arik. If he had time, he’d come back and shade in some finer details. But right now, he needed to be quick because Arik had an innate ability of knowing when he was gone from their bed. Arik would be up searching him out soon and Kellus really wanted to have something special for him when he came looking.
After folding the paper card in half, Kellus intended to write his love note inside. With his pen positioned over the pristine white paper, his mind went blank. He stopped and sat back staring at the bare page. The idea felt underwhelming now that it came down to it. What was he thinking? He had no idea what to say. How did he convey the depth of meaning Arik had given to his life? How did express the deep gratitude he carried every minute of every day for the life Arik gave him? The wealth of emotion had stolen his words and brought a sudden rush of tears to his eyes. God, he was so in love with Arik Layne.
Deciding he’d just become silly now, Kellus wiped at his eyes before anything could build enough steam and spill over while he scribbled a few simple words.
My love,
You’re my beginning and my end. You’re my everything.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
I love you forever,
Kel
When he decided that was enough, he closed the card and began filling in the hearts. As he looked down at the contrasting colors on the page, uncertainty began to set in. Was he seriously going to give Arik a piece of paper he’d scribbled on? Arik deserved more than just a hand-made card. God, he was an idiot, he should have bought Arik something special instead. He should just go back to bed and abandon this stupid plan.
“What’re doing?”
Kellus heart pounded in his chest as he looked up to see Arik standing in the doorway to his office. He’d been found. Kellus raked his gaze over his groggy lover’s form. At least he’d remembered the robe this time. The last time Arik had come looking for him in the early morning hours, he’d met the cleaning staff in the hall wearing nothing but a yawn. That had been an unusual morning to say the least, and had prompted Kellus to buy the robe.

I live in the suburbs of Dallas where it’s true, the only thing bigger than an over active imagination, may be women’s hair!
Usually, I try for funny. Humor is a major part of my life – I love to laugh, and it seems to be the thing I do in most situations – regardless of the situation, but jokes are a tricky deal… I don’t want to offend anyone and jokes tend to offend. So instead I’m going to tell you about Kindle.
I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been at home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I’ll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died – weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn’t have to be alone.
That time in my life was terrible. It’s everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.
Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness – it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it.. It never happened.
Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn’t a time she wasn’t there for me. Sometimes together and sometimes by myself, we built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It’s its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn’t be here today without her.
