~Houston Author Event – Author Spotlight Day 10: Jessica Sorensen & TWO Giveaways~

I was super excited to be asked by Emily of Lalone Marketing to take part in an ‘Author Speed Dating’ event right before the signing. Basically, each blogger that participated would get 5 minutes to talk to all 10 authors – hello! Yes, please! I was so excited because I’ve done interviews before but never in person – this was both amazing and scary at the same time, but it was an absolutely wonderful experience.

So, each day for the next two weeks, I’ll be spotlighting one of the authors that I got to sit down and chat with last Saturday – in case you missed it, last week we had S.C. Stephens, J. Sterling, Amanda Bennett, Jillian Dodd and Rebecca Donovan. Monday we had Carey Heywood, Tuesday it was Erin Noelle’s turn, Wednesday we had Rebecca Shea, yesterday Tara Sivec was fantastic and for our last day we have Jessica Sorensen!

We asked last week on our Facebook page for some questions for the authors – so I tried to incorporate as many of them as I could into the interview…I added the name of whoever ‘asked’ the question! Now…let’s get to the interview… 🙂

Lisa: We asked our followers to give us some questions – so I’ll start with those, what are some of your favorite books that you’ve read? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Jessica: That I’ve read? I can’t remember everything I read…let’s just do authors – Courtney Summers, Sarah Dessen and Annie Reed, Cassandra Clare and Suzanne Collins…that’s who I named, I think. They’re all great! There’s a ton more, but I’ll stop.

Lisa: Is there anything in any of your books that you would change if you were given the chance? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Jessica: No.

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

Jessica: I can’t…I can’t answer that one – I can’t, I have to be a writer…it’s like, the done deal.

Lisa: How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

Jessica: First one? Was a like a few years. Yeah, now it’s like a month, but the first one was worried about, I was obsessive.

Lisa: What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

Jessica: Candy. I have a candy drawer, it’s really gross – it’s like my husband puts like bags of candy in there – cause he knows – he’s like oh, she’s going to eat all of this, it’s disgusting!

Lisa: Which of your characters will you always hold a certain soft spot for? (question from Andie Lea)

Jessica: All of them.

Lisa: Which character can you relate to the most? (question from Andie Lea)

Jessica: Uhh…there’s a couple, like Ella (The Secret of Ella and Micha) a little and then Quinton (Breaking Nova), I think.

Lisa: What do you think is the most difficult…beginning or ending a storyline? (question from Andie Lea)

Jessica: The ending…I hate ending the books!

Lisa: Can this just go on forever?

Jessica: That’s why they’re cliffhangers – cause I don’t wanna end it!

Lisa: How often are you thinking and jotting notes down about the characters and storyline that come into your head? (question from Andie Lea)

Jessica: All the time! My office – my husband goes to use the printer and he’s like I saw your little weird post its you’ve got posted like all over the computer desk – like every time I get a thought it goes on a post it. So it’s like a little mess.

Lisa: If you could sit down face to face with one of your characters, who would you choose and why?(question from Andie Lea)

Jessica: Quinton. (Breaking Nova)

Lisa: Who decides who and what goes on your covers? (question from Lorie Glowania)

Jessica: Oh I don’t come up with them…the Callie and Kayden one was I told Regina, I’m like – here’s this rain scene, can we do this, and that’s what she did. It’s all her, I’ll tell ya like I just tell her, I couldn’t do these – that’s why they’re so pretty! But like everything else, like I just tell her – like I’m like here’s a scene, can you capture this? This is what they’re like and she just does it. She’s like an artist.

Lisa: Nice! Where is your favorite place to write? (question from Cynthia Mae)

Jessica: Everywhere! I have like a chair in my bedroom and my bed…my office…everywhere! I rotate.

Lisa: What was your original inspiration to start writing? (question from Rachel Talavera)

Jessica: I just wanted to write…like I told somebody, I read Twilight and I finally decided to a novel, but I’ve been writing since I was a little girl.

Lisa: What are the top 3 things on your bucket list? (question from Kimberly Talbot)

Jessica: My bucket list? I wanna drag race, in a Chevelle, I’m dead serious. This is like a big thing for me – it’s going to happen one day! I’m not kidding, like when I wrote Ella and Micha (The Secret of Ella and Micha), I’m like I want this car and I want…I don’t wanna crash into any trees, like I wanna do racing. Umm…I wanted to go to Paris but that one is getting crossed off here soon, so…and…I dunno, just dance in public when no one else is dancing. Like I saw this YouTube video of this guy like rocking out at a concert, like he’s like 40 – just solo, and everybody like just came in and like joined him – like I wanna do that.

Lisa: That’s cool – like start a dance party.

Jessica: One day – yes!

Lisa: Favorite Characters POV to write in

Jessica: Out of like all the ones I’ve done? Ohhh…Micha (The Secret of Ella and Micha). He’s fun, yeah.

I was so excited because I’ve done interviews before but never in person – this was both amazing and scary at the same time, but it was an absolutely wonderful experience.

So, each day for the next two weeks, I’ll be spotlighting one of the authors that I got to sit down and chat with last Saturday – in case you missed it, last week we had S.C. Stephens, J. Sterling, Amanda Bennett, Jillian Dodd and Rebecca Donovan. Monday we had Carey Heywood, Tuesday it was Erin Noelle’s turn, yesterday we had Rebecca Shea and today we have the always amazing and fabulous Tara Sivec. I have known Tara for about a year (I actually ‘officially’ met her last year at the Columbus, OH signing)…and while she doesn’t think she is funny, she never fails to leave me in stitches. She is totally one of my favorite humans in the world…she’s completely unpretentious, what you see is what you get with her and she’s a million different kinds of awesome, dipped in fun and topped off with Sour Cream and Cheddar Ruffles – or meth, depending on your preference. (That will make more sense later… 🙂 )

Tara: That I’ve read?

Lisa: Yes.

Tara: Oh Jesus…umm gah, I read so many! Shit balls…every book I read is good. Umm…Gillian Flynn, I’m totally addicted to her right now, cause she just write mind fuck books that just make you want to throw your kindle. Umm…she’s kind of my favorite right now. Umm…Gayle Forman, If I Stay…

Lisa: YES!

Tara: Oh my gosh! I just read those, like a month ago and I was blown away by those.

Lisa: Brooke loves those.

Tara: Yeah – those are my two favorites right now.

Lisa: Is there anything in any of your books that you would change if you were given the chance? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Tara: No, I don’t think I would. I don’t think I would.

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

Tara: Stripper! Hooker? Meth Addict? I dunno…all of the above!

Lisa: All of the above!

Tara: Homeless…Meth Addict – I’d be making meth in my basement. Meth lab, anyone? I think I could make some good money.

(I was dying laughing during all of this because her face was stone cold serious…)

Lisa: How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

Tara: Oh my goodness, Seduction and Snacks, I started that probably a year before I published it and I actually, umm… it was up on a free writing site…

Lisa: Yeah – like FictionPress?

Tara: Yeah – FanFiction.net…

Lisa: Oh yeah! Okay.

Tara: So umm…it was on there for oh maybe a year first there, and I got such a good response from it like people were like you need to publish this, it’s good…so I just had to publish it, so umm…god probably about a good couple of years, at least, of me tweaking it and changing it.

Lisa: Cool! What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

Tara: Cheesy Pringles. LOVE Cheesy Pringles.

Lisa: I’ve never had those.

Tara: WHAT?!? You’ve never had those? *GASP* Fuck your face!

(Again…I am dying laughing…)

Tara: No yeah…Cheesy Pringles or Cheedar and Sour Cream Ruffles.

Lisa: I have those!

Tara: SHUT UP!

Lisa: I brought them with me! I’m not even joking…

Tara: Those are my…

Lisa: Cause I knew we weren’t going to have a break to eat.

Tara: Those are my favorite – yeah! I like salty stuff – I’m a chips person.

Lisa: Not chocolate?

Tara: No…I don’t like chocolate.

(My face was this look of shock and confusion…this is Tara Sivec…I mean, her books – come on!!?)

Tara: I know…I KNOW! Right?! I don’t…people like want to punch me in the neck when I say that. I don’t…I’m not a fan of chocolate, like I’ll eat it like if I have PMS or something, that’s when you know, if I’m shoveling chocolate in, you know just to get the hell out of my way. Just duck and cover – run! Save yourself cause the bad things are coming if I’m eating chocolate.

Lisa: Which of your characters will you always hold a certain soft spot for? (question from Andie Lea)

Tara: Claire (from Seduction and Snacks)…probably Claire, just because…this is probably narcissistic – because she’s so much like me. Like – I love myself SO much!

Lisa: You’re so awesome!

Tara: I’m so awesome! But she is what started it all…

Lisa: Right.

Tara: Umm…because like her views on having children were exactly my views on having children. So like she holds a special place in my heart, watching her grow and actually have a child, and like love her children.

Lisa: So I can remember the first time I read those first pages, I was walking into the office and I had to stop cause I was like crying laughing and someone was like are you okay? And I’m like, no…I’m not okay!

Tara: No…I will never be okay ever again!

Lisa: Cause it’s true!

Tara: Yeah…yup!

Lisa: Which character can you relate to the most? (question from Andie Lea) Well…Claire!

Tara: Yup!

Lisa: What do you think is the most difficult…beginning or ending a storyline? (question from Andie Lea)

Tara: Neither – like everything in between. Like I always know how I want to start a book and always know how I’m going to end it….everything else in the middle is pretty much I get the ideas as I go – like I’m not an outline person, I have a general idea that this is what I want the story to be about, but I can’t, I just can’t write like chapter one will be about this, chapter two…I can’t! Like I usually don’t have any clue until I start writing, and like as I’m like halfway through a chapter I’ll be like OOOH! I know what I’m going to do in the next chapter! Like…I’m so weird, I’m so ADD!

Lisa: How often are you thinking and jotting notes down about the characters and storyline that come into your head? (question from Andie Lea)

Tara: Oh all the time! Like right now I just thought of something that I want to…I’m like excuse me, time out I wanna put this in my notepad app on my phone. My notepad app on my phone and my ipad is insane! I just…I scroll for so many – like just one liners, like I dunno what book that will go in but…yeah.

Lisa: If you could sit down face to face with one of your characters, who would you choose and why?(question from Andie Lea)

Tara: Holy shit! Umm…I would probably sit down with Drew because he’s just the most insane and funny and I think he and I would get along quite well…because we both have the humor of a 15 year old boy, so…it would be like a contest of who could come up with the best one liners. I think…I think I’d win, but I’m just throwing that out there.

Lisa: Probably…who decides who and what goes on your covers? (question from Lorie Glowania)

Tara: Umm…I did all the Chocolate Lovers ones myself…

Lisa: Nice.

Tara: Umm…my serious books, Okay Creations did and it’s basically like I have this idea in my head, this is kinda what the story is about…go with it. Umm…and like for Watch Over Me, I knew I wanted a girl like by a cemetery and she just, it like blew me away when I got that cover…

Lisa: I remember – you had it in Ohio and showed us.

Tara: Yeah! It was just…blew me away. And like same with my Playing With Fire series, like I just give her a basic like this is what the story is basically about and we don’t even have a full summary yet, it’s just a couple lines of this is what happens with her and him and go with it and she just is really good and like a lot of times I’ll do, I’ll look for images for a while first and just see just what catches my eye like for Worn Me Down, I knew I wanted a girl with some like shadowy figure like watching her in the background.

Rebecca: Some of my favorite books that I have read…I love a lot books, like I span genre, I love, from the contemporary romance umm…Arsen by Mia Asher, oh-my-gosh, I still think about that one…When It Rains by Lisa De Jong,

Lisa: OMG…yes!

Rebecca: Both of those just gutted me in very different ways…I just was talking about this with the last one (the last interview). Um…I also love mysteries, love Mary Higgins Clark, I love Patricia Cornwell, umm…

Lisa: I grew up on those!

Rebecca: Yeah! I just love to read but I love to read, ya know, a variety – the one thing I don’t read is paranormal. I have never read Twilight which shocks people…

Lisa: I haven’t read it either.

Rebecca: Umm…I don’t like vampires, like I don’t watch The Vampire Diaries – I don’t like any of that stuff, so it’s very – it’s romance or it’s mystery.

Lisa: Is there anything in any of your books that you would change if you were given the chance? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Rebecca: No.

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

Rebecca: Umm…well I am a writer but I am a marketing manager for a bank.

Lisa: Oh cool!

Rebecca: So I still work full time.

Lisa: Oh wow…

Rebecca: Yes!

Rebecca: 8 months.

Lisa: Nice. What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

Rebecca: Oh my gosh, Laffy Taffy’s – except the banana ones.

Lisa: I don’t like banana either. Which of your characters will you always hold a certain soft spot in your heart? (question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: Gabe Garcia (from Unbreakable). Always.

Lisa: I love him.

Rebecca: He’s like my perfect…like if I could create a human being, it would be him.

Lisa: There was – oh my gosh – it was right after I finished reading (Unbreakable) there was a song that came on Spotify and it was – I can’t even remember the name of the song, I could find it on my playlist, but it was just something about it that really SO Gabe and I just started bawling.

**Complete side note, I actually went back to my Spotify and it was SafetySuit – Never Stop **

Rebecca: Awww…I love my Gabe.

Lisa: Which character can you relate to the most? (question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: Umm…in my books? I guess, I would say umm…Regan in Undone.

Lisa: What do you think is the most difficult…beginning or ending a storyline? (question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: Always beginning. Always.

Lisa: How often are you thinking and jotting notes down about the characters and storyline that come into your head? (question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: All the time. I will be in the middle of grocery shopping and literally a line…it’s going to be one of those teasers – that is the line that comes to you, so I like jot it in my phone or I keep a little notebook in my purse, so it comes to you in the most random places – I’ll be in the middle of a conference call, and all of a sudden I’ll be like oh I need to write that. Ya know? You just jot it down! It’s really bizarre – they come to you at the most random times.

Lisa: If you could sit down face to face with one of your characters, who would you choose and why?(question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: Oh gosh…that’s a great question – I’m going to say Landon (from Undone), I’m going to say Landon on that one.

Lisa: Who decides who and what goes on your covers? (question from Lorie Glowania)

Rebecca: With unbreakable I found a picture on Pinterest and I message the photographer in Russia, via Google Translate – Regina Wamba came up with Undone and I saw the picture, Landon was already in my head and I saw the picture and I was like ‘That’s him!’. So I literally messaged her and she is really the one who brought those characters to life on my covers.

Lisa: Nice. Where is your favorite place to write? (question from Cynthia Mae)

Rebecca: Favorite place to write is…umm…I have a little nook, corner desk in my room, I think that’s where I write most of the time – but I’m really – cause there’s not a lot of distractions, I’m very ADHD, if there’s a TV, I can’t write to music, I have to have my head in a corner.

Erin: You did.

Lisa: You spanked me in New York!

Erin: Uhh huh!

Lisa: We asked our followers to give us some questions – so I’ll start with those, what are some of your favorite books you’ve read? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Erin: The Sea of Tranquility…

Lisa: That’s how we got our name! Drew…True Story!

Erin: That’s one of my fav’s…The Boy Who Sneaks In My Bedroom Window…Slammed…there’s so many! Okay recently I’ve read Unteachable by Leah Raeder, it was amazing. If you move over to erotica…The Reluctant Dom.

Lisa: Brooke’s read that – she said it’s amazing but it will make you CRY.

Erin: Oh…you cry so hard, but it is amazing. You know a really good erotica series that doesn’t get a lot of run is A Table for Three by Lainey Reese.

Lisa: Yes! I’ve read the first one!

Erin: Yeah…and there’s three books in the series and they’re all like standalone/spin-off’s. So it’s great – cause that’s my new thing, you can read a book and finish it and…ya know, the cliffhanger thing – I know everyone bitches about them, I wrote ‘em, I know! Ya know? But I really like that. Because you’re already connected to the characters.

Lisa: Is there anything in any of your books that you would change if you were given the chance? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Erin: Other than the editing…because I never used an editor, for the whole Book Boyfriend Series, so yeah I know there are 6 typo’s at least in Meta (Metamorphosis) and probably more in the other ones. As far as story line, I don’t think I would change anything, it happened the way I felt it at that time, despite the backlash that I received.

Lisa: Good. If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

Erin: Wait…we talked about this earlier – can I get paid to read books?

Lisa: I know – I wish! I would do that!

Erin: Ya know…like work for an editor or a publisher or something…I don’t know other than, away from books…I don’t know, I like to travel, so I think like maybe like…and I’m a big planner, so maybe I can see me doing like event planning, like wedding coordinator that type of thing, I like that – I like lists and charts and stuff like that.

Lisa: I do too. How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

Erin: Three months.

Lisa: Wow.

Erin: I started October 15^th 2012 that was the first day I wrote it and I released January 20^th…first? I mean 20^th 2013.

Lisa: Nice.

Erin: It was my grandmother’s birthday.

Lisa: What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

Erin: Food, huh? I don’t eat a lot whenever I’m writing, I drink a lot.

Lisa: What do you drink? Coffee?

Erin: Whiskey! Wine…

Lisa: That’s good! That’s good inspiration!

Erin: Yeah…food…let’s see, if I’m going to snack I like salty foods, like chips and beef jerky, I’m not a sweets eater at all.

Lisa: Oh okay. Which of your characters will you always hold a certain soft spot in your heart? (question from Andie Lea)

Erin: Ash. (from The Book Boyfriend Series)

Lisa: Which character can you relate to the most? (question from Andie Lea)

Erin: Oh…hmm…I don’t know because I try to really not write about anything in my life, I mean all of my characters I think are like…I honestly, I think Ash is probably closest to me in personality, than any of my characters even though it’s a guy.

Lisa: Interesting

Erin: Mason would probably be my choice of a book boyfriend, for me, but I think Ash is like a male version of me.

Erin: Writing it…the beginning, I think the beginning is the most difficult.

Lisa: How often are you thinking and jotting notes down about the characters and storyline that come into your head? (question from Andie Lea)

Erin: Every waking moment. I look at people and I’m like ‘Oh, you could be a character in my book!’ or someone I don’t like, I’m like ‘What’s your name? Cause I’m going to kill you off!’ Yeah no…all the time, I’m always thinking of something.

Lisa: If you could sit down face to face with one of your characters, who would you choose and why?(question from Andie Lea)

Erin: That’s hard! I think Cat from my new book. (When the Sun Goes Down)

Lisa: Who decides who and what goes on your covers? (question from Lorie Glowania)

Erin: Umm…interesting story, okay – I think you may have heard this before…

Lisa: I think I heard it in Vegas, about the boots!

Erin: Yeah, so these are my sisters boots, on front of Meta, she got married in them…

Lisa: Oh cute!

Erin: This is me on the front of Meta (Metamorphosis), we took this picture in her in laws back yard because I really had no plans on publishing for real, so her sister in law took the picture in her in laws back yard. MJ…or Hang Le, who does covers, she was a part of my book club and at the time she wasn’t doing anything with books, she designed like the band and the title and did the back cover for me, umm…then I met Toski Covey who was a photographer for children and babies, she was a fan of mine so I sent her a message and said hey would you be interested in doing a cover – she said I don’t do book covers, and I said well I didn’t ask if you did ‘em, I’m asking do you want to do them. So she took the picture for Ambrosia of a friend of hers and she kind of went into business after that. So she took these pictures, umm…Hang has done all of my graphics on all of them, and the design on all of them.

Lisa: Cool!

Erin: So…I don’t know I’ve kind of taken some heat on this last one cause I was told it had no sex appeal. And that people don’t buy it cause it looks like it’s very demure and like not an erotic book.

Lisa: What?

Erin: I know…so, on my next book I’m just going to put a big hard cock on it and call it ‘Sex Sells’!

Lisa: There you go!

Erin: I can’t wait for my mom to read this…

Erin: Reading…my first book is about girls who find their book boyfriends, so…

I was super excited to be asked by Emily of Lalone Marketing to take part in an ‘Author Speed Dating’ event right before the signing. Basically, each blogger that participated would get 5 minutes to talk to all 10 authors – hello! Yes, please! I was so excited because I’ve done interviews before but never in person – this was both amazing and scary at the same time, but it was an absolutely wonderful experience.

So, each day for the next two weeks, I’ll be spotlighting one of the authors that I got to sit down and chat with last Saturday – in case you missed it, last week we had S.C. Stephens, J. Sterling, Amanda Bennett, Jillian Dodd and Rebecca Donovan. Today we have the awesome and hilarious Carey Heywood. I had kinda/sorta met Carey at the Authors in the City signing last month in March – she was wearing these super cute tights with bows going up the back, but this was the first time I was actually able to have a conversation with her – I could probably talk to her all day and never run out of things to say. She’s very easy to talk to, so freaking funny and she’s got a hot husband (if you get a chance – tell her to make him a like page – trust me 🙂 )

We asked last week on our Facebook page for some questions for the authors – so I tried to incorporate as many of them as I could into the interview…I added the name of whoever ‘asked’ the question! Now…let’s get to the interview… 🙂

Lisa: We asked our followers to give us some questions – so I’ll start with those, what are some of your favorite books you’ve read? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Carey: I love all different kinds of books, so umm…paranormal right now, I’m LOVING The Black Dagger Brotherhood…

Lisa: I’ve only read the first one! (Dark Lover)

Carey: Holy sh-moly…umm I…Dearest Scribe Virgin I would like a Brother.

Lisa: I know right?!

Carey: Okay…and let’s see – funny books…like I think the funniest book I’ve ever read was Neanderthal Seeks Human and angsty books…ummm…The Fault in Our Stars…

Lisa: I haven’t read that yet…I have to before the movie comes out.

Carey: Ohhh…you have to prep…

Lisa: Oh yeah – Brooke, my co-blogger, has (read it) and she’s like ‘you’re not ready’ and I’m like…I’m like I know I’m not ready!

Carey: One of my friends wants to go see the movie together and I was like I don’t want to subject theater goers to my mess. Ya know I put the ugly in ugly cry. Like…woah! For real.

Lisa: We’re supposed to go see the movie at Book Bash. Cause Brooke and I are going to be together and I’m nervous. I’m really nervous. We went to see Superman and she has this insane fascination with Henry Cavill, she hardcore broke down when the movie was over – like she couldn’t control herself.

(This got us off on a tangent about Henry Cavill…finally we got back on track!)

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

Carey: Well, I still have a day job, I work in finance so I read other peoples emails and make sure that they aren’t doing bad bad things like sending porn…

Lisa: Oh nice!

Carey: Or like non secure information…

Lisa: Non work approved?

Carey: Yeah, exactly.

Lisa: How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

Carey: My first book? Probably a year…just under a year because I…with being self published I had no idea what I was doing so I started writing that book in November of 2012. I am must faster these days! At, at least the publishing side of it.

Lisa: Right.

Carey: Well and then when I first started writing that book, I started hand writing that book! In a spiral notebook and then when I filled that spiral notebook, front and back of every single page then I, ya know…I consider myself an intelligent individual so I’m kind of embarrassed by how long it took me to figure this out because as soon as I finished it, I was like holy fucking shit I have to type this out now! And I seriously was like – ARGH! It was not a happy moment!

Lisa: Yeah, no – I can imagine.

Carey: And there are parts that are probably not the same as what I wrote because going back – because I would write in bed. I don’t have the best handwriting – I could not read what I wrote.

Lisa: That’s amazing. What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

Carey: Swedish fish!

Lisa: Oh cool! Which of your characters will you always hold a certain soft spot in your heart? (question from Andie Lea)

Carey: Of mine? That I’ve written? Umm…Will and Sarah (from Him/Her)

Lisa: Which character can you relate to the most? (question from Andie Lea)

Carey: Uhh…Sawyer. (from Sawyer Says)

Lisa: What do you think is the most difficult…beginning or ending a storyline? (question from Andie Lea)

Carey: The book that I’m writing right now, that I’m gonna put out in July I had the hardest time ending it! And…so I have an author spouse – and my author spouse is Melissa Collins, so I basically ended up having like a plot pow-wow with her because I…just…for me it’s important that there’s a journey and I didn’t want the journey to end with just getting the guy.

Lisa: Yeah.

Carey: Ya know? I don’t feel like that is…

Lisa: Complete.

Carey: Yeah! And so I like the idea of a personal epiphany or a change, growth, stuff like that – and I was really struggling with this character – but no, I figured it out! So we’re all good!

Lisa: Yay! How often are you thinking and jotting notes down about the characters and storyline that come into your head? (question from Andie Lea)

Carey: Randomly during the day – and well, I have – I’ll show it to you…

She proceeds to pull out the cutest purse.

Lisa: Ooh, I love your puse!

Carey: Thank you – I love grey!

(It was obviously a grey purse!) She pulled out a small spiral notepad – fits in the palm of your hand almost.

Lisa: Oh nice – so you graduated down!

Carey: Yeah! So I have…(as she starts flipping through pages of notes)…and I have got names that I like and songs that inspire me and I’ve got like book ideas and yeah so I’ve got six different book ideas sort of jotted down – so if I ever loose this, I’m screwed!

So, each day for the next two weeks, I’ll be spotlighting one of the authors that I got to sit down and chat with last Saturday – in case you missed it, Day 1 was S.C. Stephens, Day 2 was J. Sterling, Day 3 was Amanda Bennett, yesterday it was Jillian Dodd and today we have the fabulous Rebecca Donovan. Rebecca was actually the first author I talked to – and I was so nervous! This is one of Brooke’s favorite authors…and while I’ve met/seen her before…this was just different! She was super nice and patient with me though and…I actually got lucky because I had twice as much time with her as I did all the other authors!

We asked last week on our Facebook page for some questions for the authors – so I tried to incorporate as many of them as I could into the interview…I added the name of whoever ‘asked’ the question! Now…let’s get to the interview… 🙂

Lisa: We asked our followers to give us some questions – so I’ll start with those, what are some of your favorite books? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Rebecca: My favorite books? I actually love horror fiction, dystopian, sci-fi – things I don’t write. So one of my favorites is His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman – The Golden Compass – and I loved The Book Thief, How to Kill a Rock Star…

Lisa: I LOVE that Book

Rebecca: Amazing book! One of the most understated books.

Lisa: Yes! I think she is amazing!

Rebecca: I love The Sea of Tranquility – Katja, I’m a huge fan of hers and I know she’s my friend, but I’m also a huge fan.

Lisa: That’s actually how we got the name of our blog, was from Drew, ‘True Story’. Is there anything in any of your books that you would change if you were given the chance? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Rebecca: I lived and breathed them so – no pun intended – for so long, and I messed with them…I actually at one point messed with the first (Reason to Breathe) so much before I published that I stripped it – so no!

Lisa: You’re like –they’re perfect!

Rebecca: No…I mean, I just….I can’t…I can’t…

Lisa: You can’t imagine it being anything else

Rebecca: Once it’s out there you just have to go and just do it

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

Rebecca: Well I was an event planner, I used to plan weddings and I was good at it, so probably I would do that.

Lisa: Did you like doing that?

Rebecca: Yeah!

Lisa: How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

Rebecca: My first? Took me…cause I was kind of stuck inside in the winter and I had nothing else to do so it took me about 6 weeks to write it – the first draft.

Lisa: Oh wow!

Rebecca: But then I had it for a year and a half and I messed with it for a year and a half. Umm…like What If, I just wrote, it took me 7 months – so it’s like having a child, each one has a different, like birthing experience.

Lisa: What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

Rebecca: Mountain Dew and chocolate – like usually like a Lindt chocolate, a rich chocolate, something…yeah, chocolate and Mountain Dew!

Lisa: I was going to say – I have a signed Mountain Dew (from you) on my bookshelf from Vegas! Brooke loves Diet Mountain Dew so I was like teehee, I got one!

Rebecca: I don’t like Diet! No! It’s not the same!

Lisa: Which of your characters will you always hold a certain soft spot for? (question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: Hmm…well, Emma, just because of her struggle and what she went through. But Evan, I created as my perfect guy. Like he doesn’t exist and I just made him so perfect because that was just kind of my fantasy boyfriend kind of thing so I got to make him however I wanted to be – and I’m pretty happy with that!

Lisa: Which character can you relate to the most? (question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: I dabble my personality into my female characters, so I have a little bit of Sarah’s energy and her crass and – but I have a lot of Emma’s intuitiveness…and so, yeah, I put me – any of my friends are like ‘Oh that’s so you – I can hear you talking” – so I think they know – if you know me.

Lisa: I think it’s hard not to insert yourself a little bit into your characters.

Rebecca: Some people can’t – don’t and I don’t know how to do that.

Lisa: What do you think is the most difficult…beginning or ending a storyline? (question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: Beginning. Absolutely the beginning. I write the beginnings over like 5 times. Yeah – endings I know, because I’m building myself – I know the ending before I start. So I’m building myself up through the whole writing process to get to the end.

Lisa: How often are you thinking and jotting notes down about the characters and storyline that come into your head? (question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: I don’t take notes on them – but I live and breathe them always. They’re always talking to me and I…sometimes, will talk out loud. But yes, they’re always there – I’m haunted.

Lisa: So you don’t need notes.

Rebecca: I’m haunted by voices.

Lisa: If you could sit down face to face with one of your characters, who would you choose and why?(question from Andie Lea)

Rebecca: Jonathan because he’s so messed up and I want to understand him.

Lisa: Who decides who and what goes on your covers? (question from Lorie Glowania)

Rebecca: When I was indie, that was me – I completely designed those, I had a company do it – but it was my…

Lisa: It was your concept.

Rebecca: Yeah. But with these (gesturing towards paperbacks) I had some direction, but really what it was was they give you an image and you’re like okay…so how do we do this! Like for example, this one (Reason to Breathe) looked like there was nothing really, like she was looking out of a car window and it just looked like she was looking out a window – and I was like nope, let’s change that. This one (Barely Breathing), was a whole open stairwell and there was a window in front and I’m like, nope, let’s change that. And if you look at it the door is opening the wrong way. But, Out of Breath, the same thing like so I had to make it…

Lisa: Tweak it a little bit.

Rebecca: Yeah – I said silohette her, I didn’t really want to see her too much – make it darker, so like I gave them…

Lisa: A little bit of creative input.

Rebecca: Yeah. I do like these two (Barely Breathing and Out of Breath), I don’t like this one (Reason to Breathe).

Lisa: Really?

Rebecca: No, I don’t like her, she’s not attractive – I don’t want you to see a face. I don’t want to show you a face.

Lisa: Yeah, I’m the same way.

Rebecca: What If , you’re going to see a face – because I actually met her! It was so bizarre, I was so freaked out – because I met her at Cochella, I was like…

Lisa: I know your face!

Rebecca: I created you! How are you here?

Lisa: You’re my character!

Rebecca: I was so freaked out, she’s actually a model in LA, and so we’ve been in touch and she’s actually going to be my cover model.

Lisa: Oh nice!

Rebecca: I know…but it’s so bizarre!

Lisa: I know, but I’m the same way with covers and stuff like that – that’s who the character is in my head now, I’ve got it. What is your process in writing? (question from Lorie Glowania)

Rebecca: Umm…again, I know the beginning – I know the major points, so I plot them, and I use a calendar to keep my plot, my points on there, so it’s chronologically accurate.

Lisa: Oh good.

Rebecca: Umm…and sometimes I do it in pencil because sometimes you move things and then I just draw…I just breathe from point to point, but again with What If I actually wrote out of order – and I’ve never done that before.

Lisa: Yeah that sounds like…scary

Rebecca: So this…I definitely wrote chronologically. That one, I just had like a scene and I wrote it and then I found a way to connect it and I actually had to re-write them eventually but I at least got it out. Again…every book feels like it has a different feel. So there’s no method to my madness I suppose.

Lisa: Where is your favorite place to write? (question from Cynthia Mae)

Rebecca: Um…I love writing by the ocean, I draw a lot of energy from being in that like serene setting. I don’t currently live…I live in the woods right now, which is fine and good – but I have my office, I like to usually, again, different experience – I wrote Reason to Breathe in bed. Like sitting in bed, with a pillow propped up and the others I wrote on a chaise – What If I wrote at my desk actually.

Lisa: Every one is different

Rebecca: Yeah, I know – it’s again and I don’t mess with it – I’m so superstitious about those type of things – like where ever I feel the energy, wherever I feel the mojo come in…

Lisa: You just go for it.

Rebecca: I don’t mess with it – actually the last week of What If because everything was like – I had such a hard time writing that book so the last week that everything was just flowing out, I did the same thing every day – I wore my hair in a braid everyday, I had a cheeseburger and French fries everyday and two Mountain Dews and that’s it! Every day for that entire week because I didn’t want to loose that rhythm!

Lisa: That’s so cool though!

Rebecca: OMG I was so…(laughs)

Lisa: What was your original inspiration to start writing? (question from Rachel Talavera)

Rebecca: I’ve always written – I was always a very imaginative child, I had imaginary friends and we played a lot, so eventually when it go to the point where I could write it down, for school, I was that child that had to read her story in front of the class as like an example because I just came up with these crazy stories. So…and I always journaled – I wanted to be a journalist originally. Umm…so it’s just always been a part of me, always lived inside of me.

Lisa: What are the top 3 things on your bucket list? (question from Kimberly Talbot)

Rebecca: Umm…I want to go to Africa, I want to white water raft the Zambezi River…

Lisa: Oh wow, cool!

Rebecca: Umm…I want to…hmm…I want to start a non-profit for abused teens. And I want to…something with traveling – I love traveling.

Lisa: Me too!

Rebecca: I just want to have like no limit to wherever I can go. I just want to see the world.

Lisa: Favorite Characters POV to write in?

Rebecca: Umm…huh…I think it’s more intuitive when I write from a teenage girls POV because I really am 16. So, it comes out so easily. But yeah…but I like being challenged, I liked writing from a 20 year old guys POV, but it’s just really hard because it wasn’t intuitive, it was counterintuitive.

Lisa: Right

Rebecca: Because they don’t – they are very observant, they don’t go into detail- it was really…yeah – I had to keep pulling me out of it, so it was really challenging.

Lisa: Who do you FanGirl over?

Rebecca: Oh my gosh…I don’t know – like I’m not a…I’m a very like ‘let people live their lives’ type of person. Like I will obsess over their product and if anything I’m more of a musician – like I love music, so it’s more bands and stuff, but I don’t know if – I don’t know! Because I don’t approach people, I just kind of let them live.

Lisa: I know I’m the same way – I don’t want to be an imposition.

Rebecca: Right. I appreciate what they give me but who you are – and sometimes I’m afraid to know – I don’t want to know because what if I don’t like you?

Lisa: Right, yeah. And once you do know, what if you know something you don’t like!

Rebecca: Yeah! Like no – I just want to like your music! Cause some people have made awful decisions in their personal life that come to fruition and I can’t listen to their music anymore.

Lisa: Right.

Rebecca: If you’re not of sound character, I can’t support them.

Optimism seeps from every pore of my body. I truly believe that what’s supposed to happen… will! In that regard, I don’t know how to give up; it’s not part of my biological make up.

I think this is evident when I write, leaving nothing behind and spilling it all out on the pages. I give it all to my readers – love it or hate it.

The path I’m on is very often my own, veering off the beaten path at the sight of something more interesting or captivating, getting caught in the vines and thorns in order to experience the beauty and intrigue others often pass by. And I always meet the most interesting people along the way…

Jillian: Umm..Hate Me is probably my favorite, Hate Me and Love Me because I think you saw a little more from Keatyn- but That Boy was my first so.

Jillian: I don’t think so.

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

Jillian: My major was fashion design, so that’s what I like – interior design, fashion design and that’s what I did before I started writing.

Lisa: How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

Jillian: 7 years.

Lisa: What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

Jillian: Buffalo Wing Popcorn

Lisa: I’ve never heard of that!

Jillian: We have a place in Texas called Lonestar Popcorn Factory and they have they have a Ranch one that you can mix with it.

Jillian: Probably Jayden…yeah, and Danny and Phillip too – I love them!

Lisa: Which character can you relate to the most? (question from Andie Lea)

Jillian: Probably Maggie in the Keatyn Chronicles – she’s probably the most like me. She’s very straight forward, just tells it like it is – I’d say her.

Jillian: Beginning – I always write the end first.

Lisa: Really?

Jillian: Yeah – I always go to the end and then I’m like how the heck do I get there!

Jillian: I don’t think I ever stop. I mean it’s like – you should see my phone

She actually pulled out her phone and showed me – scrolled FOREVER – it was awesome and intimidating!

Jillian: And like each one – I’ll wake up in the morning and just sit and write. And then I email it to myself.

Jillian: Oooh that’s a hard one – Danny. I’m sorry, I gotta go with the hot one! Danny – in real life, yes! I don’t know if we’d be sitting down!

Jillian: I have a cover designer – and then I was looking for some stock photos to try and find the right girl for Keatyn – That Boy and That Wedding are my own artwork.

Lisa: What genres do you enjoy reading? (question from Cynthia Mae)

Jillian: I had three dreams about the characters in That Boy and I had to know what else happened. Like so I wrote down those three scenes that I had dreamt and then I wanted to know what else happened so I started writing – I never intended really to publish but then I worked on it and it went from there.

I was super excited to be asked by Emily of Lalone Marketing to take part in an ‘Author Speed Dating’ event right before the signing. Basically, each blogger that participated would get 5 minutes to talk to all 10 authors – hello! Yes, please! I was so excited because I’ve done interviews before but never in person – this was both amazing and scary at the same time, but it was an absolutely wonderful experience.

So, each day for the next two weeks, I’ll be spotlighting one of the authors that I got to sit down and chat with last Saturday – in case you missed it, Day 1 was S.C. Stephens, yesterday was J. Sterling and today we have…the lovely Amanda Bennett. So…there is a story behind Amanda’s interview. She was my half way point – I had interviewed 4 other authors, so I had gotten into a little bit of a groove, but I interviewed her right after S.C. and I don’t know if I was just overly excited or what but instead of saving the audio – I deleted it! I hated myself – and we were on a time schedule so I couldn’t just be like oh hey – let’s re-do that! :-\ Awkward! Well…luckily I went out to dinner with her (and Tara Sivec) that night and with a few beverages and sitting on Tara’s lap, we recreated the interview. It was so much better the second time around – especially the instances where alcohol and Tara influenced the answers. I severely edited this interview – once again…so glad people cannot hear this audio!

Lisa: We asked our followers to give us some questions – so I’ll start with those, what are some of your favorite books that you’ve read? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Amanda: The Thoughtless Series, Rebecca Donavan’s series – I love Jenn Foor’s books. LOVE!

Lisa: Is there anything in any of your books that you would change if you were given the chance? (question from Kristen Kocher)

Amanda: No

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

Amanda: Forensic Psychologist.

Lisa: How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

Amanda: 1 ½ to 2 years – now, not so much.

Lisa: What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

Amanda: I don’t eat when I write – I can’t.

Lisa: Which of your characters will you always hold a certain soft spot for? (question from Andie Lea)

Amanda: Dax (from Forever and Almost Always)

Amanda: All of them – because they’re all a part of me.

Lisa: What do you think is the most difficult…beginning or ending a storyline? (question from Andie Lea)

Amanda: Ending – no beginning!

Amanda: All the time, everyday – all day.

Amanda: Madison Raine (from the Raine Series)

Lisa: Why?

Amanda: Cause he’s HOT!

Lisa: Who decides who and what goes on your covers? (question from Lorie Glowania)

Amanda: I find stock cover photos that kind of fit what I’m writing at the moment and then I send it to Robin, my cover designer and she works her magic.

Lisa: Where is your favorite place to write? (question from Cynthia Mae)

Amanda: In my bedroom, on my bed – in my yoga pants, tank top and usually ugg boots or socks. And then my husband gets mad because I have boots on the bed – but I have to take smoke breaks!

Lisa: What was your original inspiration to start writing? (question from Rachel Talavera)

Amanda: My dad died when I was 12 and I started writing poems and then it just went from there.

Lisa: What are the top 3 things on your bucket list? (question from Kimberly Talbot)

Amanda: To hang out with Tara Sivec – Skydiving, go to Italy – omg what else – oh and have one of my books made into a movie.

Lisa: Favorite Characters POV to write in?

Amanda: A man’s. I LOVE writing in a guy’s POV – my favorite one to have written in so far was definitely Madison Raine in the Raine series – he’s yummy!

Lisa: Favorite sex scene you’ve written?

Amanda: My life! Just joking! Any of them in Misguided Heart

Lisa: Who do you FanGirl over?

Amanda: Tara Sivec! It would be like old school people – like F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Bronte Sisters, Hemingway.

Lisa: What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Amanda: My kids and sitting in Tara Sivec’s lap!

I am as the old saying goes… “Never judge a book by it’s cover”…. unless of course that cover is awesome:) No, in all actuality I have been fortunate enough to be a million different people in my stories and books, and I am grateful everyday that I get to do the thing that I love the most. I am a hopeless romantic at heart and I do believe in happy endings. I also believe that it takes a bit of bad experiences and rough roads to get you there, but in the end I strongly believe it is worth it. I am “THAT” person who does believe that everything happens for a reason:)

Amanda currently lives in Utah with her many men (her husband, two little boys, and two dogs). She is an avid San Francisco 49ers and Dexter fan. Sterling. J was actually one of the first authors that I contacted…I messaged her on GoodReads and honestly, I wrote her 2 minutes after finishing The Perfect Game, I’m surprised it even made sense because I was in such a haze of love for Jack and Cassie. She was so incredibly sweet and just the fact that she took the time out to write me back at all really meant a lot. She was a blast to talk to and absolutely hilarious.

Lisa: We asked our followers to give us some questions – so I’ll start with those, what are some of your favorite books that you’ve read? (question from Kristen Kocher)

J.: I just read Play by Kylie Scott, have you read it?

Lisa: No, I haven’t read it yet, but I’ve heard it’s amazing.

J.: That book was so fucking funny! It was hilarious! I laughed so much in that book, I would just sit there, laughing. I’m on the treadmill, cracking up. It was so good – I highly recommend it! That was great and then I just read Left Drowning by Jessica Park – that was amazing! I loved it! And I just read Hate Me by Jillian Dodd and that was great too

Lisa: Is there anything in any of your books that you would change if you were given the chance? (question from Kristen Kocher)

J.: No.

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

J.: I would be working still in the entertainment industry…doing something in that capacity. That’s what I did my whole life before writing.

Lisa: How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

J.: Oh God, my first book? Like a year.

Lisa: Oh wow

J.: I mean forever – right? Took me forever to write it and then I didn’t know what I was doing – oh and then I was quiering agents and trying to get it published – and that books was so bad! So yeah…it took a while. I’ve sped things up since then!

Lisa: Were you writing and working at the same time?

J.: Nope – I got fired! And I just started writing right away.

Lisa: What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

J.: Go to snack food when writing – currently? Because these change – because I get completely obsessed, so when I wrote the first book I was obsessed with Trader Joe’s Ginger Things and that’s what I would eat every day. So right now, my go to snack food is…what am I obsessed with? I’m seriously disgusting – like I’m a pig with food and I am so gross…like I HAVE to have this! Oh I’ve been obsessively eating macaroons from this cupcake store.

Lisa: OMG Macaroons are so good!

J.: They’re so good –and every month they switch flavors!

Lisa: Oh my gosh!

J.: It’s exciting – see it’s always something bad. It’s always like a bad junk food that I’m obsessed with eating. I’m also obsessed with eating this taboli salad at Safeway and I buy it all the time and its so good – and I’d like to think that that’s good for you, but it’s probably not! Which is why I like it so much!

Lisa: Which of your characters will you always hold a certain soft spot for? (question from Andie Lea)

J.: Oh Jack…Jack Carter

Lisa: Good Choice

J.: Hands down

Lisa: Which character can you relate to the most? (question from Andie Lea)

J.: Cassie…she’s so me.

Lisa: What do you think is the most difficult…beginning or ending a storyline? (question from Andie Lea)

J.: I guess getting started – well..no it’s all that stuff in the middle, where it’s like things are not necessarily crazily happening where I feel like it’s boring writing it, so I’m like shit! Please don’t be boring reading it – but like you do get bored writing certain parts – like cause things are…there’s not always action happening constantly. No the endings always great, right?

Lisa: How often are you thinking and jotting notes down about the characters and storyline that come into your head? (question from Andie Lea)

J.: Oh for always – constantly, my brain never shuts off. I’m constantly…that’s the hardest part, you can’t stop.

Lisa: You can’t turn it off. If you could sit down face to face with one of your characters, who would you choose? (question from Andie Lea)

J.: Oh god, well I can sit down face to face with the real Jack Carter and I did just see him not that long ago. OMG! So Drake! Duh! Because Walker Rose is based off of Drake! So I would like to sit down with Drake on his face, face to face.

Lisa: Who decides who and what goes on your covers? (question from Lorie Glowania)

J.: Oh…if I don’t photograph it, I search for people that in my mind fit my characters, and then I send it to my cover designer and she is AMAZING! Clearly I have a style – that I like.

Lisa: Yes you do, but it’s good because you have a unique identifier

J.: It was not intentional – I’m just like wow….I really like – I could not believe when I got Seeing Stars in print how much it resembles the other books and I was like Fuck! I clearly like the same…this style.

Lisa: What genres do you enjoy reading? (question from Cynthia Mae)

J.: New Adult for sure – but the real new adult, not the fake erotica coined as new adult. Or what people are pretending is new adult with some 40-year-old characters as new adult, that shit is not new adult. Real new adult.

Lisa: Where is your favorite place to write? (question from Cynthia Mae)

J.: I have an office now! So in my office, I have like a little lounge chair that is weird and crooked, so I have to sit on it a certain way or else like the cushion goes crazy so I’m like – I have pillows propped underneath me. I love my office – it’s so pretty.

Lisa: Nice

J.: And tiny. And crowded.

Lisa: What was your original inspiration to start writing? (question from Rachel Talavera)

J.: Like twelve years ago.

Lisa: Oh wow

J.: And it never left my brain.

Lisa: That’s good

Then we went on a tangent about how cold it was in that room – it was cold as balls for the record – but it was hot as fuck when we originally got there!)

Lisa: What are the top 3 things on your bucket list? (question from Kimberly Talbot)

J.: Oh god…okay, go back to the UK. Travel…it’s a lot of travel – I have to see Italy before I die, or I will haunt it in my sleep. Umm…I have not made the NYT, I want to make the NYT.

Lisa: Really? I can’t believe that – that’s shocking to me.

J.: Don’t. I’ll just cry.

(Then I made a reference to an earlier conversation about how she was told at a Barnes and Noble in California that under no circumstances were her books in any of the B&N’s in northern CA. Nice!)

I got fired from my last job.
It’s true.

I know you’re sitting there thinking, “Jenn, how could anyone in their right mind fire someone as amazing and awesome as you are???” And i’d love to give you a good reason, but the truth is… being This! Awesome! is clearly very scary to other less awesome people. 🙂

So I said screw them and started writing my first book. And you know what I realized? Writing books that mean something to me is a million times better than working my ass off for someone who doesn’t really care about anything other than the bottom line.

My soul feels more satisfied.
My heart, more full.

So thank you for reading, loving and recommending the stories I write.
I think you’re awesome- and not only am I not scared of other awesome people, I want them on my team!

Now…I’m so thankful no one else can hear the audio of this interview because I was really holding in my fangirl-ness. Thoughtless is one of my favorite books of all time (it was one of the first books I read after 50 Shades), S.C. is up there with some of my favorite authors and it was really an honor to get to sit down and talk to her – she was so nice and sweet…exactly like I thought she would be!

SC: I read a lot of fantasy, so the books that I like are like Terry Goodkind and Robert Jordan. I’m reading Game of Thrones right now.

(This got me on a tangent that I will spare you about the audio book of Game of Thrones that I very unsuccessfully tried to listen to!)

Lisa: Is there anything in any of your books that you would change if you were given the chance? (question from Kristen Kocher)

SC: Oh, so much! I would just clean it up. I’ve changed writing styles a little bit since then, so I would just go through and clean it up. Plot line, I probably wouldn’t change. It is what it is.

Lisa: If you weren’t a writer what other profession would you be working in? (question from Deborah Favorito)

SC: I would be a bookkeeper, which is what I was before.

Lisa: How long from concept to completion of your first book? (question from Tanya Gaunt)

SC: 6 months

Lisa: What is your go-to snack food when writing? (question from Nicole Montgomery)

SC: I drink coffee. Like the entire time.

Lisa: No food just coffee?

SC: Yeah, I have to stop and oh ya know, I’m kind of jittery, maybe I should eat something.

SC: Ending. Cause there are so many possibilities.

Lisa: This is true – and it’s also picking the right one and not rushing it.

SC: Yes – making sure it’s an actual ending and not ya know, you’ve got to answer all the questions, if it’s the last book, you’ve got to leave a couple danglers if it’s in the middle.

SC: All day long.

SC: The first (cover) of Thoughtless, I did myself. Then, my self publish ones obviously I did myself too, but I’m horrible at covers so now I have someone else do it. And they just kind of, I tell them the basics of what the story is about, they come up with it and say ‘Yeah that looks good!’

Lisa: Where is your favorite place to write? (question from Cynthia Mae)

SC: My office, which is just a standard bedroom in my house.

Lisa: What was your original inspiration to start writing? (question from Rachel Talavera)

SC: I had a fantasy turn into a very long day dream that was reoccurring and I just went home and wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget it and then it just grew and grew and grew.

Lisa: What are the top 3 things on your bucket list? (question from Kimberly Talbot)

SC: Oh gosh…I want to go to Australia, that’s been on my bucket list for a while now. Um…gosh, I’m just…I’m so simple –like if I could just be with my family, I’m content. I have places I want to visit on my bucket list – oh but a Thoughtless movie would be nice, I dunno how much I have to do with that, but I can put it on the list, right?

Lisa: Favorite Characters POV to write in?

SC: Kellan’s – I think Griffin would be fun to write.

Lisa: OMG! (excuse me while I spazzed out over the thought of Griffin’s book – I LOVE him! Once I recovered from that thought….) Favorite sex scene you’ve written?

SC: Oh gosh…either the Espresso Stand or the Bathroom, in Effortless.

Lisa: Both good choices! Who do you FanGirl over?

SC: Christina Lauren.

Lisa: Love them! What do you consider your greatest achievement?

SC: Just the fact that I completed a book and published it.

Lisa: What is your favorite word?

SC: I’m going to say my favorite word is moist because everyone hates that word, so I’m going to make it my favorite.

Lisa: What is your favorite curse word?

SC: Fuck.

Lisa: Who is your hero?

SC: My hero? That would probably be my mom, she passed away a few years ago.

Lisa: Biggest Fear?

SC: Losing my kids.

Lisa: Deepest Regret?

SC: Oh boy…there’s so many. Um…yeah I think I’d rather not say. There were some.

Lisa: Worst flaw?

SC: Oh gosh…(bell dings…ending our time!) – saved by the bell!
