And the bonfires and games and the sex and the pain are glorious and so fucking bittersweet because they are so very her, so much the things she loved and needed, and what is worse?  To live with her alive in our hearts even though it bruises us deeper than any caning ever could–or to forget her?  My own pain I can bear easily, but witnessing yours every day, knowing that there is a third of your heart missing, is almost beyond what I can take.

So this I pledge to you, husband, as the February dawn finally breaks and shows me the lean muscles of your back and thighs and the taut curves of your arse:

Dear Cheyenne,

I’m writing this letter to you just hours after our engagement. I’m sitting by the window in “our” room at Cloverleigh Farms, scribbling on a piece of the inn’s stationery, hoping the flashlight from my phone doesn’t wake you up.

Although, I am fairly certain I tired you out tonight. Which I will happily do every night for the rest of our lives.

A few minutes ago, I was lying beside you, which is my favorite place to be, when anxiety about the future had the nerve to keep me from falling asleep. Sometimes that happens, but I don’t want you to worry. My therapist says it’s normal to worry about the people and things you care about. And I’ve never cared so deeply about anything as I do about or future together.

I want to protect you and Mariah and any children we (hopefully) have together. I want to give all of you the happiest days you can imagine. I sometimes feel so happy and lucky that I need to pinch myself. What did I do to deserve such beautiful souls in my life, let alone to have them love me? 

Usually when this happens, I write in my journal (therapists’s orders). But since I didn’t bring it, here I am, scribbling this letter to you in the dark, my unease melting away as I watch the snow falling outside the window, listen to you breathe, inhale the scent of your perfume, and taste you on my lips. 

In a moment, I will slip into bed again beside you, wrap my arms around your soft, warm body, and just be grateful for the chance I’ve been given to be the one who gets to make you happy forever. 

I can’t wait to see where forever leads us.

Hey, Honeybee,

When I sat down to write this, I tried to remember the last time we spent Valentine’s Day together. We have a ridiculous history of being together only in the mornings or an hour or two before midnight. I think there was one time we had lunch at the hospital but I might be mixing that up with your birthday. Whenever it was, you called your sandwich anemic and ate all my chips. 

Since that walk down memory lane was too complicated, I just tried to remember last year. I think that might’ve been worse. 

It seems like a decade since last February. It seems like we’ve lived several lifetimes in the past year. It seems like we’ve spent too many of those lifetimes apart. I hate how much time has been stolen from us. I hate how we won’t ever get it back.

There were entire months when I could barely breathe around the fear of something happening to you. I decided I’d force Stremmel to let me see you if you got sick, even if it was against the rules. I planned out speeches to convince you to stop working at the hospital but abandoned them every time you came home because I knew I couldn’t ask it and you wouldn’t do it. 

It might seem like I’m full of piss and vinegar today—I might very well be seeing as the breakfast burrito truck was out of avocado this morning and a burrito without guac is like a body without a soul—but I promise there’s an upside to this. 

We lived through one of the most grueling first years (year and a half, ish) of marriage anyone could imagine and look at us now. Still here, still doing this thing where we build it while we live it. Still scraping together hours between shifts and on-calls. Still dreaming up all the vacations we’re taking when the world opens up. Still batting house ideas back and forth and debating whether we’re grown up enough for that. Still doing our part to keep the local restaurant industry going with all the takeout we order. Still texting each other in rap lyrics. Still creating art on your gorgeous skin.

I know it’s not the day that matters. I know it’s not the flowers or the chocolates, or candlelit dinners or champagne. It’s not the fancy lingerie either since you know how I consider that an extraneous step between clothed and naked. 

The only thing that matters is we still come home to each other at the end of the day—or night, as it tends to be for you. You are mine and I am yours, and life as we know it can grind to a halt and still that truth is unchanged. 

Our lives may never be the same again but the way I love you and belong to you is permanent. 

Happy Valentine’s Day, Alex.
