Matt Sky is missing. After a solo ascent of Longs Peak that left only a large blood stain, tatters of climbing clothing, and the tracks of an animal in the snow, he is presumed dead.

Hannah Catalano is guarding a secret: She knows Matt is alive. After Matt’s memorial service, she lingers on the East Coast with his family, but it soon becomes clear that his brothers’ motives are less than gracious. Nate Sky is bent on tracking down the author of Night Owl, a book that charts the last days of Matt’s life with uncanny and scandalous accuracy, and which appeared only after his death. Seth Sky is bent on getting Hannah into his bed.

Tensions rise, secrets grow bigger, and passions run deeper—and hotter—as Matt struggles to find himself, Hannah tries to escape Nate’s libel suit and fend off Seth’s advances, and together Matt and Hannah strive desperately to maintain their ruse and their relationship…until Hannah is put in danger and Matt must make a life or death choice.

At twenty-nine, Matt Sky is trying to return to normal, having faked his death and come back to life. He and Hannah move to a simple house in the suburbs, and strive to grow their relationship into something durable and honest. They become more and more entangled, in the best ways possible.

At twenty-eight, Hannah finally has the life she’s always wanted: she’s pursuing her career as a literary agent at Granite Wing Agency, she is writing her first solo novel, and she is living with her hot, passionate lover. For the first time, Matt and Hannah are able to explore intimacy without inhibitions—without lies, secrets, or jealousy—and the results are explosive.

Still life together is not as easy as it seems. Matt is estranged from his brothers in the wake of his cruel stunt; Seth Sky, embittered by his failed pursuit of Hannah, makes a play for Hannah’s sister; and the topic of Hannah’s novel—her relationship with Matt and the Sky family—is driving a wedge between her and Matt. The lovers are devoted to one another, having come through many ordeals, but is their bond strong enough to last a lifetime?

“Merry Christmas, baby,” he said, the edges of laughter in his voice, “and happy Valentine’s Day. I made a snack.” He hooked a thumb toward the table. I glanced over his shoulder. It was Valentine’s Day, wasn’t it? I had forgotten.

In the candlelight, I saw two paper plates, a bag of Wonder Bread, a jar of peanut butter, and one spoon. I pressed my lips into a line to keep from laughing.

“Oh, sweetie. Wow. And… a tree.” My mouth twitched. “Did something burn?”

I was still acutely aware of Matt’s arousal pressed against me. His fingers gathered up my coat as we spoke. I trembled against him.

“I was making pasta. I threw it out. It came out all… weird. Hannah, what—” Matt’s fingertips trailed over the tops of my thigh-highs. Again, confusion flashed through his eyes. He began to undo my coat, freeing one button after another and finally throwing it open. I swayed on my heels. Fuck…

Matt’s expression grew serious, and my own giggly mood floated into oblivion. Already, my chest rose and fell with heavy breaths. My nipples stood stiff against the mesh cups of my slip. I lowered my eyes.

“Do you… like it?” I whispered.

How did this work? Matt’s desire seemed to suck the sound out of the room, and the breath out of my body. And he was only staring. I peeked at him through my lashes.

The look I found on his face is with me forever. It was need mingled with satisfaction. A hunger in his eyes, a thin smile on his lips.

Matt wanted me, and Matt already had me. I was his.

He pushed the coat from my shoulders and it flopped to the floor. I dropped my purse. Matt shucked off his t-shirt and I stared at his torso.

I came alive then, flattening my palms to his chest. His heart knocked under my hand.

“Yeah,” Matt said. He nudged me toward the wall. I let him move me; I yielded easily and started to pant. Heat gathered between my legs. “Yeah… I like it, Hannah. I like this…”

He pinched my nipple through the polka-dot fabric. I moaned. My hands flew to the drawstrings on his pants. He grinned down at me as I fumbled with the knot.

“I like this,” he whispered, shifting out of my reach and slipping a hand between my legs. My thong was soaked. Matt pulled it down. He unclipped my garters and let my panties slide down my thighs.

“This.” He squeezed my ass with both hands. I squirmed.

“Please.” I reached for his pants again. It was humiliating, being the only one exposed, and I wanted… I wanted to see Matt’s need. I wanted him naked.

Again, Matt moved his hips out of reach. He chuckled and pressed my back into the wall. I stamped my foot.

“So precious, Hannah. So fucking sexy. Touch your breasts… your nipples.” Matt trained his green eyes on my chest. “Do it, and I’ll take off my pants.”

I clenched my teeth and closed my eyes, lifting my hands to my breasts. Matt always embarrassed me during sex. And some part of me… loved it.

4.5 “little bird” “lord of lies” “Happiness is useless to me.” Kisses

I don’t know what to think or say or feel right now. This series and these characters mean so much to me and I’ve been looking forward to Last Light for a few days shy of a year. Night Owl completely blew me away and obviously, I had very high expectations for Last Light…needless to say, I was not disappointed. For the record…Last Light is the second book in the Night Owl Trilogy…a trilogy that absolutely must be read in order…and trust me…you need to experience Matt Sky.

Matthew Robert Sky Jr…oh my goodness where do I even begin with this man. Why is it that I find all of his negative traits adorable and endearing? I mean, he’s surly…brooding…at times rude…he has jerkish tendencies, can say some pretty mean stuff and at his worst, he’s really a complete asshole. And yet…I love him. I love him because of those things and in spite of them because while Matt is a very complicated character, I’ve seen the capacity of his heart and that is what makes it possible for me to see past all the negative. Matt isn’t a ‘bad guy’ by any stretch of the imagination…he’s definitely an acquired taste but…I get it. He has two loves in his life…his writing and Hannah. That’s all there is…and it blows my mind how truly simple Matt is, once you break him down.

‘“Hannah-“
“No, listen. I’m okay with that, Matt. I don’t…” She traced her fingers over my knuckles and pursed her lips as she thought.
Reflexively, my fingers stirred against her thigh. We should turn in early. Yeah…right. Hannah was wearing a tiny turquoise nightie and I was in nothing but lounge pants. And after almost two months of living with Hannah, I still felt crazy when I looked at her.
“I don’t want to be the sun in your sky,” she continued. “Do you get what I mean? I’m happy being the moon. I’m happy coming second to your writing. I don’t want to be your whole life. And if this-” she kissed my shoulder. The imprint of her lips burned on my skin. “If this crazy thing we’re going to do is what it takes to protect your first love, then I’m game. We’re in this together, Matt. You can count on me.”
“Hannah.” I spoke her name slowly. I dragged my fingers up her inner thigh. “You’re stronger than I am. Do you know that?”
She shivered. “We’re different…”
“Night and day,” I murmured. The air between us was charged. A few touches, a kiss – that was all it took.’

Hannah Catalano…oh my dear sweet little bird, if it was possible, I grew to love Hannah more… I always thought Hannah was brave and strong…much more than I think she was given credit for, but she blew me away in Last Light. I feel like I got to experience Hannah in a different light…she is and always will be a more submissive woman, at least where Matt is concerned but it’s very interesting because I think being with Matt has made her stronger…more confident…it’s almost like he fuels her. With all that is going on and what she is having to do throughout Matt’s absence, in a way, Hannah blossomed. She had to be strong for both of them…do things she may have not liked…and all the while missing and longing for Matt in a way she couldn’t really express to anyone else. The sacrifices she made for him…because she loved him…made me love her a million times more…she truly is an easy to love character. At least for me.

‘“Great,” I said. “Perfect. I can’t wait…”
“Me either,” she murmured.
“I can’t wait, Hannah.” I pressed the point of my pen against the page. Black ink bled out. “You’re home. I’m glad.”
“Me too. I don’t…want to wait.” Whenever Hannah got embarrassed, which happened often and easily, her voice softened. I grinned and tilted my head. Mm, Hannah’s shy side delighted me. It made me feel like a devil.’

Last Light is very different from Night Owl…we get to see Hannah and Matt’s relationship be tested…we see Matt and Hannah more as individuals, away from their relationship and how they handle being apart…this was both a good and bad thing for me. I loved the angst that the separation brought…and the way it in some ways strengthened their relationship…it was a whole new dynamic and stage for them to get to know and understand each other. The devotion that these two have completely captivated me…granted, Matt has his own unique way of showing it, I couldn’t not love the way they expressed themselves. Matt and Hannah are a very passionate couple…that’s one of the things I enjoy about their relationship…their physicality, their chemistry, it’s part of what makes them unique and it only strengthened over the course of Last Light. And thus that leads to my struggle…I love them so much together…and given the situation that we’re faced with, that’s just not possible.

‘“Do you…like it?” I whispered.
How did this work? Matt’s desire seemed to suck the sound out of the room, and the breath out of my body. And he was only staring. I peeked at him through my lashed.
The look I found on his face is with me forever. It was need mingled with satisfaction. A hunger in his eyes, a thin smile on his lips. Matt wanted me, and Matt already had me. I was his.’

I really cannot get over how much more connected I felt to Matt while reading…I felt like I got to understand him so much more…see him in a different light…he was elusive and untouchable in NO and I feel like in LL everything is laid out on the table…flaws and all and it’s either time to accept him and love him for who he is or…move on. He’s unapologetically who he is…the good, the bad and the ugly…insanely talented, massively arrogant, blunt and crude…but he does have this deep and unyielding passion for the things he loves and seeing that come alive is what draws me to him the most. I love how different he is from other book boyfriends….his surely attitude and sinfully sexy mouth. I also enjoyed getting more of the other Sky boys…Nate, of course, is still the same resilient and reliable older brother. And we also get to meet Seth…I have thoughts on Seth. While I never disliked him, I really never knew what to think about him. I wanted to like him, but there was something about him that made me uneasy. He’s hard to get a read on…he’s a little bit like Matt but with a lot of unpredictability.

‘I should have known better, but I never learned, and I wondered at myself as I waited for Hannah to say more. Why did I always do the worst things? Why did I always arrange my life so that it was on the brink of collapse? That answer came to me as if it had only been waiting for the question. Because happiness is useless to me. Because I need agony and heat in my life.’

I went into Last Light with no expectations…no predictions…and no idea what M. Pierce was going to do to me…and I was pleasantly surprised with the directions it took. It could have been predictable and cliché…but it wasn’t. At all. I’m not going to lie, the beginning is slow…at least it was for me because that’s when Matt and Hannah are apart the most. Because they have to be and…there is purpose behind it. That purpose doesn’t make a lot of sense until towards the end of the book…but there is reason and cause behind everything that happens and I appreciated that very much. Because I went into it not really knowing what might happen…I didn’t figure it out until it smacked me in the face. It worked very well for the characters…it was completely necessary as far as character development, although it brought out some particularly choice emotions on my part…but I should expect nothing less from M. NO and LL are very different books and I mean that in a good way. NO is so passionate and electric and emotionally charged…LL is a little bit more subdued, the intensity is there but in a different way…but it still worked for the flow of the story line.

‘I want this, Matt said. Don’t hold back. Do your best…
Matt always wanted me to abandon reason – in sex as well as in life. That’s what he did. Why couldn’t I? He lived without fear of what others thought. I lived like a normal person, in my self-imposed restraint. But Matt was free, I knew, and I was not, and the double edge of his freedom was his incredible instinctive selfishness.’

Something I loved from NO that I felt was stronger in LL was…the writing. M. has a very distinctive style…and I am a huge lover of basically every word. It’s very crisp and clean with a slight edge…it’s descriptive but not to the point of being over the top or flowery. It’s hard hitting and emotional…but not sappy…it feels raw and real. The connection I feel to the characters in this series just defies words…I didn’t think it was possible for me to love Hannah and Matt more, but somehow M made it happened. I enjoyed seeing a different side to both of them, as well as their relationship…it made me appreciate them more as characters and brought me closer to understanding who they are.

‘“Always,” he whispered. “You feel it, too, don’t you? You always want me. I always want you. We belong together, Hannah.” His fingers dug into my bottom and I squeaked. It hurt just enough to feel good.’

Alright…so the end…it might be considered a little cliffhanger-ish. On the cliffhanger spectrum it is towards the lighter scale…but…it’s there. There are a lot of things still left unanswered IMO…which is a good thing because now I’m dying for After Dark. I know it will be worth the wait because LL was…and I have no doubt, Hannah and Matt will get the HEA they so richly deserve.

5++++ “Mm.” “little bird” “Mr. Frostypants” Kisses

So…the synopsis hooked me. This is a pretty original concept, at least as far as I was concerned and it definitely piqued my interest. When it comes to reading erotica…I have one expectation – insanely hot sex…everything else just makes me a happier camper. Well, this book achieved that…and then some. I never knew what to expect with the story line or characters and up to the epilogue, I loved every direction it took me.

Matthew Robert Sky Jr….M. Pierce…Mr. Frostypants…Matt Matt Matt…what am I going to do with you. He’s like the ‘anti hero’. He’s snarky and brooding and not in the normal sexy way I usually love…in a different sexy way that I still love equally as much. He’s surly and sour, he’s secretive and just…an enigma…but that’s what made me like him more. What else did I like about Matt…I like that he made list’s…I liked that he had an unconventional pet (I’ll get to that in a little bit)…I liked the necklace that he got Hannah *sigh*…and I even liked his personality, as strange as that may sound. He’s so interesting and different from the normal BBF’s. It was an interesting dilemma because I never disliked Matt completely but he doesn’t make it easy to just fall in love with him….until you see him completely with Hannah. Then all bets are off. Plus it helps that he’s hot…don’t judge me, I am a little superficial.

‘I had never felt such longing in my life. My whole body responded to the idea of Hannah near me.’

Hannah Catalano…little bird…oh, I straight up loved Hannah from the get go. She’s so likeable, genuine, real…funny, authentic…I just liked her! I liked her relationship with Matt…her tenacity, her attitude…the way she approached things…especially where Matt was concerned. She knew delving into a relationship with him wasn’t going to be easy…but I know she wasn’t expecting what happened. I’ll give her this much, the girl has got some balls…she’s not a push over and she’s not weak…she is slightly different when it comes to Matt and his charms but…come on now, that can be forgiven. What girl isn’t a little googly-eyed and out of character when it comes to the man who can knock us on our ass.

‘Was I asking for trouble?
Tonight, trouble was a beautiful body standing next to a beautiful car right outside my house, waiting for me.
I didn’t feel a single twinge of fear.
I felt raw elation.’

So Matt and Hannah do not have the typical meeting. By far. And I liked that! It’s not out of the realm of possibility…while some of it may have been a bit…kinky, it worked for me. You cannot really call what develops with Matt and Hannah ‘insta-love’ because they have interacted for months – granted on a purely professional, strictly business level – but…they are not strangers by far. That being said, things do progress rather quickly once that line has been crossed…and there is no turning back. Another thing I loved. 🙂 I guess that is another thing I loved about Matt, once he figured out his feelings, he was sold…there may have been ‘extenuating circumstances’ that made things more difficult, but the way he felt about Hannah was concrete.

‘“Beautiful man. I wish you could see yourself. You look lost.”
“I feel lost,” I whispered.’

Hannah and Matt are hooooot! Scorching…sizzling…blazing…ten alarm fire…that kind of HOT – am I painting a clear picture? Like all out smoking, it is hands down some of the best sex I have ever read. I say this with no shame…I was panting during some of the scenes. Matt is dominant and demanding and all kinds of yumminess. Now, don’t get me wrong – the sex is not the only thing about them that this dirty book whore loved. Watching Matts personality open up more and change now that he is experiencing Hannah first hand…he morphed into this super insanely loveable Matt – the core essence of him was still there, still surely and sour, but he was loving, sweet and receptive to Hannah. He treated her with such care and yet still managed to fuck her on a desk and out in the wilderness…sounds pretty perfect right? Yup…it was.

‘…I was wrapped around her finger. She gazed over her shoulder with half-lidded eyes and whispered my name. Why did I think I had any power over Hannah? I was hers.’

Alright, well there is more to this story than meets the eye…I don’t do spoilers…but like I said I didn’t see most of what was coming. You know what else I didn’t see coming…Lawrence. Matts pet rabbit. Yeah…pretty much the one of the most awesome things I have ever read in a book. And once again…it makes me love Matt more. Just sayin. I also loved Chrissy, Hannah’s sister – because she made me laugh. I love Nate, Matts brother, because he’s the best big bro in the world. I loved the plot because it was very unpredictable and I never knew what was going to happen and while, yes it is an erotica, there was a significant amount of angst IMO.

‘”My body…craves your body.” Matt bounced me again and we moaned together. “It f-feels the distance…when we’re apart. Hannah, I can’t be apart from you.”
“You never have to be,” I said.’

Another thing I loved…the writing. It’s crisp and clean while being descriptive and precise. It’s a very unique style and it just flowed throughout the entire book for me. The dialogue is fantastic, Matt and Hannah’s inner thoughts are perfection and there is so much sarcasm and whit weaved into the book, I couldn’t get enough. Also, M. Pierce is a very intellectual writer – there are words in this book that I have never seen used in a romance. That’s awesome! We switch back and forth, alternating chapters from Hannah and Matts POV’s and both were written extremely well. Once you realize the pattern it’s relatively easy to keep up with and I enjoyed having both of their POV’s – there was never any backtracking or redundancy, the characters might address their feelings in regards to something that previously happened but we never had to go thru the event all over again from their POV.

‘The hollowness inside of me didn’t shrink. It expanded until it seemed to press at the limits of my being. I became less than a shell of myself. I was a fine limning – a suggestion of Hannah Catalano.
One day, I thought, I wouldn’t even be that.
I understood how people fall apart.
I understood how dangerous it is to let someone become your whole life, and how powerless we are to prevent it. Never deny me, Matt once said. As if I had a choice.’

Okay so now I must address the ending. The last chapter is fabulous. Perfection. Great ending for Hannah and Matt, even though it’s not as conclusive and concrete as I usually like. But…then there is the epilogue. If you don’t like cliffs – do not read the epilogue, problem solved! With the way Night Owl ends, it could have been a standalone…but it’s not a standalone. It’s the first book in a trilogy…so of course there needs to be a reason for you to read the next book…the epilogue is that reason. I have so many questions and I am not a very happy girl about the cliff – and an epilogue of two pages did that to me! The ‘great and horrible’ epilogue aside…I really loved this book. Everything about it worked for me and I couldn’t get enough. And even though the epilogue cliff’d me, I can’t wait for the next book…so it worked! If Night Owl is any indication of what is to be expected for the rest of the series, count me in. This book is astoundingly well written, practically flawless in my opinion and if you’re a lover of contemporary romance, erotica and indie books, this is by far one of the best choices out there.

            Time: 5:32 PM

            Hi Hannah,

We’ll do dinner at 8ish. I’ll pick you up at 7. I need to be inside of you.

            Matt

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

I wilted in the office chair. Fuck. There is was again, that crazy sexy candor.

Get on your hands and knees. I’m going to take you from behind.

Not to mention the bossiness. It should have annoyed me—this wasn’t a gentlemanly invitation, it was an order—and yet I felt giddy. I could see Matt again. I could make sure he was real and that this was actually happening to me.

And maybe this time I could act like the smart, confident woman I was, not the blushing brainless mush of last night.

I spent the next hour and a half prepping. I unpacked a few boxes of clothes, showered and shaved, borrowed some of my sister’s perfume and makeup, and dressed in a short strapless blue dress. Underneath, I wore a strapless gray pushup with creamy trim and a matching thong. At the last minute I threw on dangly earrings and a silver bracelet.

Matt arrived promptly at seven. I peeked at him from a front window. He stood leaning against his car, looking bored.

Holy. Fuck.

He wore pale gray slacks and a crisp white dress shirt. His wild hair was wet and pushed back. As I studied him, he glanced at his watch, then smirked toward the house.

Fuck, he looked right at me! I lurched away from the blinds. So uncool right now.

When I went out to meet him, I thought I saw his cocky smirk falter. Success! Maybe. It was hard to tell. Matt’s smirks came in flavors—two parts kindness, one part wicked amusement, a little lust in the mix. Oh, and one hundred percent smug bastard.

Matt moved to meet me and I thought he might grab me and start groping my ass again. I wanted him to, even if Chrissy was watching from her window.

Matt looked edible in dress clothes.

Instead, he hugged me gently and kissed my cheek. The air went out of my lungs. Oh lord, the way that shirt tucked into his slacks, showing off his trim hips. I got a whiff of cologne.

When he opened the door for me, I nearly fell into his car. Déjà vu.

“There’s a place in Boulder I like,” Matt said as he drove. He stared ahead, serious and unsmiling. Totally unlike the man who’d driven me for hours through the nighttime prairie. “The Number Nine. Great food. I hate formal stuff, but what the hell.”

I frowned at him.

“So what, you’re just doing this for me?”

“Sure.” He glanced at his iPhone. “I figured you’d like a meal.”

“Well that’s kind of shitty Matt,” I snapped.

“Excuse me?” He was scrolling through his Pandora stations and driving too fast, with an unnerving amount of inattention. He didn’t even look at me.

“I’m not some idiot girl you have to wine and dine before fucking. God, I’m sorry you feel the need to endure a nice dinner with me.”

Matt chuckled. What a prick!

“Hannah, I enjoy eating.” He’d settled on music. I recognized The Lumineers. Of course this jackass had great taste in music. “And I’ll enjoy eating with you. I only meant that formal things… make me uneasy, okay? Don’t worry, we’ll do something I really enjoy afterward.”

He reached for my hand. I held it stiff on my lap for all of three seconds.

“I love when you’re feisty,” Matt murmured. He pulled my hand onto his lap and pressed it against his thigh. Oh god, oh god, not again. I felt my ability to articulate myself gliding away. “You look amazing, Hannah. I know you want to get fucked, wearing a dress like that. I’ll deliver, don’t worry. I held back last night, but not this time. You’re bad to wear that. I love it.”

Matt slid my hand a little closer to his cock and left it there. He was watching the road with a stony expression. He reached over and squeezed one of my breasts, slipping a few fingers into my cleavage. I heated from head to toe.

“Matt,” I squeaked. Cars were passing us and we were passing them, and I knew people must have seen Matt with his hand on my breast.

“What? This is what you want, Hannah. Don’t try to deny it. You want to be used. I’m enjoying you, little bird. God, I love your body…” He shifted in his seat. The music seemed to dissatisfy him and his hand left my breast to switch to a dubstep station. Then, as if it were nothing, he retook my breast and wriggled his fingers into my cleavage again.

We rode most of the way to Boulder like that. When I tried to inch my fingers closer to his cock, he brushed my hand away and started to tease me. He said he wasn’t surprised I wanted to touch his cock. He pushed his fingers into the cup of my bra, pinched my nipple, twisted it, and held it that way.

“Nn… no,” I gasped, but I didn’t try to stop him. Why? I was getting so turned on I’d started to worry about leaving a wet spot on my dress.

“It’s okay, baby, it’s okay,” he soothed. “Don’t fight it. I’m going to fuck you so hard tonight. Just think about that.”

I closed my eyes. My nipple was quickly going numb, but Matt kept readjusting his fingers, twisting it tighter and pinching it to keep stimulating the nerves.

I was in a daze by the time we parked and walked to the restaurant. I couldn’t understand how Matt kept his cool. Fuck, I wanted to drive him insane tonight. What happened to my feminine power?

At least he couldn’t tease me in the restaurant. I would use the time to refocus.

The No. 9 was small and dimly lit, and I could tell right away that it was crazy expensive. Matt had made reservations.

When we were seated, I smirked and nudged his foot under the table.

“You’re so cocky. How did you know I’d agree to go out with you?”

“Oh, I didn’t,” he said. His serious eyes skimmed the menu. I loved the way he looked at things—with withering dismissal or raw hunger.

I wanted to be the center of his attention.

Shit. Was I falling for a stranger? This was not in line with my productive summer plans.
